Jun-07-12  zb2cr: I found the first few moves, but my board vision ran out after 28. Qxh6+, Ke8. I could not see how to conclude. Thus, no credit for me.
Jun-07-12  Patriot: White is up the bishop pair.

I really want to play 25.Bxf7, breaking down the barrier.

25...Kxf7?? 26.Qxg6#

25...Rxf7 26.Qxg6+ Kf8 27.Bxh6+ Nxh6 28.Qxh6+ Kg8 29.Nf5 looks good.

25...e4 26.Qg3 Ne5 (26...Bxd6 27.Qxg6+ Kh8 28.Bxh6 ) 27.Bxg6

Jun-07-12  agb2002: White has the bishop pair for a bishop and a knight.

The pawn on f7 protects the square g6. Therefore, 25.Bxf7:

A) 25... Kxf7 26.Qxg6#.

B) 25... Rxf7 26.Qxg6+

B.1) 26... Kf8 27.Bxh6+ Nxh6 (27... Ke8 28.Qxg8+) 28.Qxh6+

B.1.a) 28... Rg7 29.Nf5 + -.

B.1.b) 28... Ke8 29.Qe6+ Kf8 30.Ng6+ Kg7 31.Ne7 + - with multiple threats (Nxc6, Nxc8, Qg6+, etc.).

B.1.c) 28... Kg8 29.Nf5 again with multiple threats (not 29.Ng6 Rh7 30.Ne7+ Rxe7 31.dxe7 Qxh6).

B.2) 26... Kh8 27.Qxf7 Nf8 28.Nf5 Qd7 29.Qxd7 Nxd7 30.Nxh6 + - [R+3P vs N].

C) 25... e4 26.Qg3

C.1) 26... Rxf7 26.Qxg6+ looks similar to B.

C.2) 26... g5 27.Be6 with an extra pawn and multiple threats (Nf5+, Bxg5, Qg4, etc.)

Jun-07-12  LoveThatJoker: Tough puzzle!

The best that I can see, after a fair amount of consideration, is:

<25. Bxf7 Rxf7>

(25...Kxf7?? 26. Qxg6#; 25...Ne7 26. dxe7 Rxf7 27. Qxg6+ and 28. Qxf7 ; 25...e4 26. Qg3 and all of White's threats are still on the cards)

<26. Qxg6+ Kf8>

(26...Kh8 27. Qxf7 )

<27. Bxh6+ Nxh6>

(27...Ke8 28. Qxg8+ )

<28. Qxh6+> White has eliminated Black's Kingside pawn cover and the numerical force count is even; White has ideas like b4 and Rc1 in the horizon as well at some point, but Black looks defensively active nonetheless. Perhaps a evaluation, but I don't see anything better than this at this point.

LTJ

Jun-07-12  LoveThatJoker: Despite not having found what transpired in the game continuation after 28. Qxh6+; my idea of playing for the destruction of Black's Kingside pawn cover, keeping the force count equal despite the initial sacrifice and evaluating the resulting position correctly as better for White after 28. Qxh6+ allows me - in all objective fairness - to give myself a 0.85 out of 1 for today.

LTJ

PS. <agb2002: B.1.a) 28... Rg7 29.Nf5 + -.> Incorrect due to 29...Qxg2#

Jun-07-12  TheoNov: I feel this is a difficult one for Thursday. A lot of accurate calculation is involved to determine if the Bxf7 sack works. At the least, you need to see

25. Bxf7 Rxf7 26. Qxg6+ Kf8 27. Bxh6+ Nxh6 28. Qxh6+ and evaluate both of

A) 28. .. Ke8, (with the game continuation 29. Qe6+ Kf8 30. Ng6+ Kg7 31. Ne7 Rf6 32. Qg4+ 1-0)

B) 28. .. Kg8 (where you need to find 29. Nf5! Rh7 30. Qe6+ Kh8 31. Ne7 Rxe7 32. Qxe7 1-0)

I missed too much, so no credit.

chrisowen: It's a far thing for noe could content finding off a fashion

being 15,Bxf7 Rxf7 26.Qg1+ Kf8 27.Bxh6+ Nxh6 28.Qxh6+ and white has

three pawns for his piece let us say it l0 in this case as whites

surge looks set it brief art in d6 comes a cropper to black a

choking hold on black in exactly it 25...nf6 proves stiffer

resistance instead rf8 allows uplift in bishop which looks winning.

A tour in the vast complexity of QGD go figure white infact is ready

to strike dig in bxf7 and everything flows freely even material is

level it aim big plus the d6 pawn is bone it her in dismantling tout

suite straightaway it a classic case of mal-feasance by black allow

to it.

Jun-07-12  kevin86: White sacrifices the bishop to get the queen into position for the final attack.

gawain: I thought that was pretty tough for a "Medium."

Yes I saw that 25 Bxf7 is the way to start, and I saw that if B recaptures with the King he is mated immediately, but I could not visualize the entire series of moves if Black plays 25...Rxf7 and then 26...Kf8.

I guess the combination more or less plays itself once you get going. Over the board I hope I would have had the nerve to plunge in.

Jun-07-12  LivBlockade: Can someone with a good engine compare 25. Bxf7 to 25. Qg3 - just curious. Thanks!

Jimfromprovidence: 25 Bxf7 e4 caused me problems. It took a while to see 26 Qg3 as winnning.

The threat is 27 Bxh7+ followed by 28 Qxg6+. If 26...Rxf7, 27 Qxg6+ Kf8 28 Bxh6+ Nxh6 29 Qxh6+ follows.

click for larger view

If 29...Kg8, 30 Qg6+ Rg7 31 Qe6+ Kh8 32 Ng6+ may follow.

Either 32...Rxg6 33 Qxg6 or 32...Kh7 33 Ne7 will follow, both winning for white.

Jun-07-12  David2009: M Beinoras vs H Salo, 2009 White 25?

up on Crafty End Game Trainer, link http://www.chessvideos.tv/endgame-t... (as usual, you are white, drag and drop the move you want to make). The EGT defends 25.Bxf7 with 25...e4! as in <Jim>'s line and which forestalls Rook lifts in some variations: 25...e4 26.Qg3 Rxf7 27.Qxg6+ Kf8 28.Bxh6+ Nxh6 29.Qxh6+ Kg8 30.Qg6+ Kf8 to reach

which can be won with care (but I couldn't manage it without silicon help, although I like to think that over the board and taking it more slowly I might have found the key idea). Of course, you can always bail out with a perpetual check in the second diagram. Enjoy completing the task! There are almost certainly multiple paths to victory.

Jun-07-12  adhitthana: What happens in the game if 31...Rxe7?
Jun-07-12  LivBlockade: Thanks <Patriot>!
Jun-07-12  sevenseaman: Thanks for the evaluation <Patriot>. I too was curious. I did not work on them all the way but <Qg3> and <Bxf7> were the two top candidate moves for me.
Jun-07-12  zb2cr: Hi <adhitthana>, You questioned: "What happens in the game if 31...Rxe7?"

Your answer: 32. Qxe7+, Kh8; 33. Rd3! Black is nearly helpless with his Knight and Bishop walling off his Queen.

Jun-07-12  Tiggler: <adhitthana: What happens in the game if 31...Rxe7?>

32.Qxe7+ followed by 33.Rd3 seems lead to a King chase that must be winning for W.

Jun-07-12  PugtheThug: white has some good moves but first I think it should start with 25.Bxf7.
Jun-07-12  Moonwalker: I could only see up to 28.Qxh6 in my head. Maybe I should have used a board :/
Jun-07-12  CHESSTTCAMPS: In this middlegame attacking position, white has the bishop pair, a strong advanced pawn on e6, and more pressure on the opposing king. Once again, f7 is the weak link and it's worth a piece to demolish the pawn shelter.

25.Bxf7!

Threatening 26.Qxg6+ Kh8 27.Bxg8 winning.

A) 25... Qxd6? 26.Qxd6 Bxd6 27.Be6 wins a piece.

B) 25... Rxf7 (Kxf7? 26.Qxg6#) 26.Qxg6+ Kf8 27.Nf5! (Threatening Nxh6 and Bxh6+. The immediate 27.Bxh6+ Nxh6 28.Qxh6+ Rg7 29.Rd3 [29.Nf5?? Qxg2#] Qe4 gives black more play.) Rxf5 28.Qxf5+ Kg7 29.Rd3 and there's no defense to 30.Rg3+ Kh8 31.Qg6.

B.1) 26... Kh8 27.Qxf7 wins.

B.2) 27....Qe4 (directed against Nxh6) 28.Bxh6+ Nxh6 29.Qxh6+ Ke8 (Kg8 30.Ne7+ Rxe7 31.dxe7 is winning) 30.Qh8+ (Qe6+ Kf8 31.Nh6 Rg7! threatening Qxg2# holds) Rf8 (Nf8? 31.d7+ wins) 31.Qh5+ Kd8 (Rf7 32.Nh6) 32.Qg5+ Nf6 33.Ne7! Rb8 34.Ng6 Rf7 35.Nxe5 leaves white with 4 pawns for the piece and the BK remains exposed.

C) 25... e4 26.Qg3 Rxf7 27.Qxg6+ Kf8 28.Nf5! Ne5 29.Bxh6+ Nxh6 30.Qxh6+ Kg8 (Ke8 31.Qh8+ wins Ne5) 31.Qg5+ followed by 32.Ne7 wins.

More complex than I expected. Time for review....

Jun-07-12  CHESSTTCAMPS: Crafty EGT found holes in my analysis as it so often does.
Jun-08-12  dragon player: After considering a lot of moves, this move came up to my mind:

25.Bxf7 Rxf7

If 25...Kxf7 26.Qxg6#

26.Qxg6+ Kh8
27.Qxf7

threathening 28.Ng6#, and winning the exchange.

Time to check.

--------------

Damn, I completely missed 26...Kf8. Lets say half a point for today.
