 | | Richard Taylor: Isn't a Gibbon at least an ape - hence there is a connection? What is a gibbon - is it like a baboon? Both players are from Auckland, NZ - and I know them both. Bob (originally from England) is sometimes called 'Gibbo' - he is a properly qualified FIDE Arbiter and very nice fellow. He is well known in NZ Chess and well liked. Gino is a young man who in this game missed that his knight was pinned but who is a much better player than this game shows. I suppose they wanted an example of an Orang Utang opening, named by Tartakower after a visit to the zoo...in NY I think it was. |

 | | Richard Taylor: 10...e4? is an instructive error. (And 13. ... Bf5xe4?? loses. 13. ... Be6 had to be played.) Looks 10. ... e4 was an impulsive move. |

 | | Benzol: For those who somehow happened to miss it this pun idea had a percursor yesterday in the Christmas present hunt, namely R Gibbons vs C Morrison, 2003 where the clue for the game was the Rolling Stones track "Monkey Man". Neil Sedaka's "I Go Ape" may have been more appropriate perhaps. |

 | | Richard Taylor: <Benzol> You maen it came up in the clue hunt? I gave up on those when I thought I was so close to the "One ill grin." I did quite a massive hunt on that one. I was proud of stumbling on Unzicker where the "zick" homophone sick and so on... remember the German is often pronounced almost as an "s" and "un" is or could be "one" in French... also I was checking out a name with "ein" (one in German) Also trying things such as ON e ... there were other names to do with grin or smile etc etc
Also "Tiger Hillarp Petersson" almost has all the words in it!! But no one praised me or commented which shows the general animosity toward me on here because I talk hard truth about the US. I think such as our friends Bickle and Tech Draw etc have a deep guilt of war... On here members only comment if I abuse them! Or if they try to score points as old Half Pie Joe used to do*... When I make an interesting comment about chess they all ignore it! Well at least by studying these ones I am learning about the methods of the puzzles...some are very ingenious. * He would wait till I didn't dot an "i" and then put the boot in to me - no sweat!! Wonderful man !! |

Dec-18-09 | | newzild: Just a question - how come this game is in the database when neither player is rated over 2200? I thought that was the minimum requirement for a game to be in the database. |

 | | Benzol: <Richard Taylor: <Benzol> You maen it came up in the clue hunt?> Yes, you can see some kibitzing about it at the kibiters cafe. Kibitzers were talking about gibbons being apes not monkeys there as well, hence my earlier comment here. |

Dec-18-09 | | roastedrook: this game can be thrown - without a bit of sorrow - in the ( trash games cane ) .. |
|
Dec-18-09 | | Eisenheim: awful gotd, pad pun and an enigmatic clue for the clue game. I have to confess that i'm generally very good at riddles, but can't find the pulse of the clue game. I actually thought the video of Shikara was a Led Zeppelin video. its all good and amusing though. <newzild> I wasn't aware of the 2200 requirement and think they can post any game that is instructive. some of the tournies don't even feature 2200's v 2200s at times. maybe its just a guideline not a rule |
|
Dec-18-09 | | gmalino: I agree with all the kibitzers, saying this game isn't worth to be GOTD, only one fact that gave me a grin: "polish opening-czech defense"
could be lengthend by "...russian system-belarus variation". That would be coooooool. |
|
Dec-18-09 | | PierreTheLion: I for one appreciate the change of pace. I can only watch so many Semi-Slavs and Sicilians before I get bored. I like seeing the pet openings thrown every once in a while. |

Sheesh... can't we just enjoy some chess for a little while, without having our country bashed by self-hating Americans and overseas America-envyers? See--now you've got me doing it!
Let's hear it for the Polish Opening. And while I'm at it, Richard, three cheers for the tuatara. |

 | | benveniste: For Christmas, are we going to see a Yule Gibbons GOTD? |
|
Dec-18-09 | | desiobu: Was 22...g5 played in hopes of a perpetual via something like 23. Qxg5+ Kf8 24. Qany Rg8+ and so on |
|
Dec-18-09 | | GreenFacedPatzer: What's the idea behind black's piece sacrifice on move 19? Running through the game, it seems like he just drops the piece, no major threats develop, the game simplifies... and finally black resigns, down that same piece. The white king looks a little vulnerable at the time, but surely he'd be more vulnerable with the black knight on g4 and no white bishop in the game. I don't see what the sacrifice buys. |

It's not really a piece sacrifice. If Black moves the bishop to safety, White wins the knight with 19.g5 and probably gets the queens off to boot. Black apparently thought that <18...Bxg4> was a better practical chance. The real blunder was <16...Bf5>, allowing <17.g4> with tempo. This is a common little trick. You often see variations of it in the English where Black develops naturally and unthinkingly; for instance, <1.c4 e5 2.Nc3 Nc6 3.g3 Bc5 4.Bg2 Nf6 5.e3 d6 6.Nge2 Be6>

And now 7.d4, threatening 8.d5, wins a piece. |
|
Dec-18-09 | | GreenFacedPatzer: <Phoni Benonini> Thanks for the cogent explanation. As usual, when I think I see a blunder in these games, it turns out the real blunder happened moves earlier. |

 | | Richard Taylor: <newzild: Just a question - how come this game is in the database when neither player is rated over 2200? I thought that was the minimum requirement for a game to be in the database.> I think it is only a general requirement as my game v <Benzol> is on here. But just recently rating here have been upgraded so de facto both players are now over 2000. This happened as (as in my case) I won and lost (or drew) v players whose rating was then say 1400 - 1600 or less but who were playing at an extrapolated de facto level of about 1800 - 2000 or higher and so on. It is all very complex and mysterious. The game here is not very good of course. But it does show a typical tactical trap I suppose - that is a bit hard to see sometimes... |

Let's hear it for the Polish Opening. And while I'm at it, Richard, three cheers for the tuatara.> I got that attitude from an American! A 'crazy' (but socially and politically) passionate poet who I billed once for a reading / event here, as Wild Bill Millet - he was always complaining about things (o.k. LIKE ME he was also a massive egotist)...but he was big critic of the US (and o.k. he went on a bit but he had some good points)... he flew for the US Airforce in the War - now my point was that if I say anything about chess or make a brilliant observation no one is interested because I have made cogent and deep critcisms of various policies and atrocities of the US going back to the Korean War and the Vietnam war....now YOU KNOW I am right on that. You cannot evade history that easily. But I am NOT saying all Americans are evil...or the US policy is always wrong... I am NOT saying that ...but I bet someone will zero in on all my negative comments and overlook my positive ones (and the fact that I critiqued other countries also including NZ), and the great games I played beating three FMs, and two NMs in three years (not to mention draws and wins versus various IMs over the years)...or any of my comments on chess... and I am NOT saying I am a "great" or even a particularly strong chess player (I can produce hundreds of really bad games to prove that!!)...but I am good at certain tactical and attacking positions... in fact one of my wins was against Bob Gibbons when I sacrificed a Queen in a tournament in 1979. By the way the Tautara is not a dinosaur... it is closely related but is in class of its own. Looking at them - they look like amazing little dragons... |

 | | Benzol: <Richard Taylor> <But just recently rating here have been upgraded so de facto both players are now over 2000.> <Richard> Tony Booth was telling me last Tuesday that NZ ratings were some 200 points below their FIDE equivalents. My own rating has now jumped to 1805 even though I haven't played in a rated tournament for lord knows how long. Weird really. |
