May-01-16  alphee: Well, I could get the first couple of moves 31. ♖g6 ♔g6 32. ♗d3 ♔f7 33. ♖h5 as white had 2 rooks under attack and had to attack the king to save one, but what black could play next remained unclear and he could have played Kg7 too ... Not too bad for a Sunday puzzle.
May-01-16  gofer: So lost...

...I considered <31 Rxg6+>, but couldn't make it work. Instead, I tried 31 Bxa6 trying to set up a queen side pawn rush, followed by Nc5, but really I was stumbling in the dark today...

Nil Point!

May-01-16  wooden nickel: 31.Qxd8 would fit in the "insane" category today, but just doesn't quite want to work!
May-01-16  Timi Timov: An easy puzzle, but getting the next moves for white is very hard
May-01-16  WorstPlayerEver: After 31. Rg6 Kg6 32. Bd3 White has B+2p vs Rook. And Black has a weakened king side. So far, so good. Then I got stuck lol
May-01-16  morfishine: Seems kind of messy with multiple places for improvements

For example, <37...Qc6> improves for Black (instead of 37...Nf5??) threatening mate at <g2> and 37...Qxc1+

*****

May-01-16  dufferps: Yes, the next two moves are intuitive. After that it is hard to see the line,.
May-01-16  jith1207: Yes, I was so lost but as a black, 37..Qc6 and try a mate at g2 could have been better, though I was not sure if I have been seeing all lines well enough to make that statement. I need Silicon help on such puzzles, Hey, we can cheat after accepting the loss.

steinitzfan: Too hard for a Sunday.

Seriously, though, the last two or three moves would make a pretty decent puzzle right there. I'm going to enjoy looking this over with Fritz later today.

May-01-16  AlicesKnight: Completely with <gofer> ...

Jimfromprovidence: 35...Rc8?, undoubling the rooks, allows 36 fxe3, losing a piece I would think.

May-01-16  psmith: <JimfromProvidence> 36... Rxc1+ 37. Qxc1 Rxd3 leaves Black pawns behind, but is it an easy win for White?

I believe so because black cannot go 36... Rxc1+ 37. Qxc1 Rxd3 because of 38 Qc4+. He has to give up that piece outright.

May-01-16  wtpy: Saw until 36...ne3. First moves were easy, next moves were not.
May-01-16  agb2002: White is a bishop and a pawn up.

Black threatens 31... fxe5 and 31... fxg5.

I've considered a number of moves Rxg6+, Be8, Bd3, Rxd5, Qxd8, Qe1, Nc5, Bc4, Bc6, etc.

In the case of 31.Bc6:

A) 31... Rxc6 32.Qxd8 fxe5 33.Rxe5 and the knight is lost due to Re7+ winning the queen.

B) 31... fxe5 32.Rxe5

B.1) 32... Rxc6 33.Qxd8 transposes to A.

B.2) 32... Nf6 unclear.

------

I don't know. I'd probably play 31.Rxd5:

A) 31... Rxd5 32.Rxd5 Rxd5 33.Qxd5 + - [B+N+2P vs R], followed by Bf1 and a queenside pawn roll.

B) 31... fxg5 32.Rxd6 (probably better than the greedy 32.Rxg5) 32... Rxd6 33.Be2 (or Bf1) followed by the attack against Black's a-pawn (Nc5, etc.).

May-01-16  agb2002: Not my best day. I meant 33.Qxa6 in my line A, instead of the illegal 33.Qxd5, but this allows the killing 33... Rd1+ 34.Kh2 (34.Bf1 Qxa6) 34... Qxf2.
May-01-16  Patriot: I considered 31.Rxg6+ Kxg6 32.Bd3+ but did not think about 33.Rh5.

My move was 31.Nc5 since 31...Qxc5 32.Rxg6+ Kxg6 33.Bd3+ wins the queen. It's not all forced and there are other replies.

This is indeed "insane" but you also have to consider that white is already up a piece and a pawn, so the question becomes "what can be sacrificed with initiative?" And a sacrifice will happen here because both rooks are hanging.

May-01-16  King.Arthur.Brazil: Lookin at the position of begining, maybe everybody had wondered "how they have reached such position?" Maybe, you lost some part of the continuity, of the plan, cause there's no direct tatics about it, but the opened position of black king. So the 31.Rxg6+ was my move, but didn't know how exactly to follow (maybe not only me, but Popov himself). So I accept to continue the game, following the black moves, step by step. Doing this, I would play 33.Rxd5, I didn't see 33.Rh5 which is best. I moved 34.Qd2 because has no other way to take the White Q to attack. My move 35.Nc5 would not follow white's plan, but protected the Bd3, for a while. I would follow Jim "with no providence" (lgs, hello my friend, how are you?) and 36.fxe3 and get out the board with "I'm singing in the rain..." lgs. For 36.Rh7+ we, here in Brazil, joke this with "bad players didn't lose the opportunity to check!" (lgs, again). after 37.Rxh4, I gave up cause there's no direct move to win. Black is in a bad position, sure, but you need black moves as well. Seemed to me, that black could have other moves...

May-01-16  mel gibson: Too hard for me.
The computer agrees with a first 6 or more plies.

May-01-16  Tiggler: My engine thinks this was all garbage from both sides, starting with black's 35...Rc8? Time trouble I presume.
May-01-16  muratski: The last move g3 is a very sadistic move. Abandoning a checkmating continuation for a prolonged torture. Popovic must have had some beef with Timman.
May-10-16  psmith: <Jimfromprovidence> Of course!
