Sep-25-19 | | Walter Glattke: Zugzwang after 34.Qxa8 a5 35.f4 b5 36.axb5 Qb6 37.Qf8 or 35.-Qc8? 36.Qc8+ Kxc8 37.Bxe6+ fxe6 38.f7 |

Sep-25-19 | | agb2002: White is a pawn up.
The alignment of the black king and rook on their back rank suggests 32.Rxe8+ Kxe8 33.Qg8+ Kd7 34.Qxa8 but it looks there must be something stronger. If Black's f-pawn were not on the board the black king would be overburdened with the defense of the queen and the bishop. Hence, 32.Bxe6 with the double threat 33.Rxe8+ Kxe8 34.Qg8# and 33.Bxf7: A) 32... fxe6 33.Rxe8+ Kxe8 34.Qxc7 and mate soon. B) 32... Qc6 33.Bxf7 wins decisive material. |

After 32. Bxe6 Qb7 (or Qc6), white has <33. Rxe8+> winning a lot of material (because 33...Kxe8? Qg8#). |
|
Sep-25-19 | | patzer2: My attempt at today's Wednesday puzzle was 32. Bxe6 +- (Mate-in-9, Stockfish 10), which is as decisive as the game move 32. Rxe8+ (Mate-in-17, Stockfish 10). P.S.: So where did Black go wrong?
The decisive error was 13...g4?, allowing 14. Nh3 +- (+4.29 @ 32 ply, Stockfish 10). Instead, Black could've secured a slight advantage with 13...Kg8 ⩱ (-0.44 @ 30 ply, Stockfish 10). |

Sep-25-19 | | Steve.Patzer: I went with Bxe6 which mates quicker. I was perplexed why Euwe chose Rxe8. |

Sep-25-19 | | agb2002: <beatgiant: <saturn2>,<agb2002> After 32. Bxe6 Qb7 (or Qc6), white has <33. Rxe8+> winning a lot of material (because 33...Kxe8? Qg8#).> Yes, in the case of 32... Qb7, but after 32... Qc6 33.Rxe8+ Black has 33... Qxe8. |

Sep-25-19 | | stacase: That took about ten seconds. Maybe not a Monday puzzle, but pretty darn obvious. |

You're right. on 32. Bxe6 Qc6, White should instead play <33. Qxf7> and that looks like mate in a few. |

Sep-25-19 | | TheaN: I intended 32.Bxe6 Qc6 (fxe6 33.Rxe8+ with mate soon) 33.Bxf7 +- and I was certain Black had no valid escape options. He doesn't, albeit 33.Qxf7! is even stronger. In itself, 32.Bxe6! is stronger than 32.Rxe8+!?. In fact, only 32....Qd7 (Bxd7+ +-) prevents mate significantly, as after 32.Bxe6, Rxe8+ with Q*8# pretty much forces Black to relocate the queen, which in turn drops f7 and a mate soon to follow anyway. |
|
Sep-25-19 | | TheaN: Considering SF9 analyzed it on ply 27, I guess this entire sequence is the longest mate after 32.Bxe6, surprisingly: 1) mated-in-9 (27 ply) 32...Qd7 33.Bxd7 Kxd7 34.Rxe8 Rxe8 35.Qxf7+ Kd8 36.e6 Rxe6 37.Qxe6 Kc7 38.f7 Kb7 39.f8=Q Ka6 40.Qec8+ Kb5 41.Qb4# |

Sep-25-19 | | Damenlaeuferbauer: After long pondering, my old Dutch friend Machgielis, who was the fifth world champion from 1935 to 1937 and the second-last reliable president of FIDE from 1970 to 1978, won with 32.Rxe8+!?,Kxe8 33.Qg8+,Kd7 34.Qxa8 or even 34.Qxf7+!?, but 32.Bxe6! would have been the best and prettiest solution! |

 | | sjunto: Stockfish has 32. Rxe8+ as mate in 12, and 32.Bxe6, my choice, as mate in 9. |
|
Sep-25-19 | | TheaN: <Damenlaeuferbauer: After long pondering...> Though I enjoy your posts I don't think 'long' applies here :>. I guess 26.g5 required some thought (even not too much) but the rest is trivial. |

 | | Jimfromprovidence: Another way to win that looks good as well is 32 Rxe8+ Kxe8 33 Bxe6. click for larger viewNow there's a mate in one threat on g8 and h8, white's bishop protects d7, and black's f pawn is pinned, so black must lose the queen next move. |
|
Sep-25-19 | | King.Arthur.Brazil: I agree with <Jim> The best is 32. ♖xe8+ ♔xe8 33. ♗xe6 for which black loses the ♕ to escape from check-mate |
|
Sep-25-19
 | | eternaloptimist: I saw 32.♖e8 quickly but I spent some time trying to figure out the next move. I knew it was either 33.♗e6 or moving the ♕ to black’s back rank to get the skewer on the ♖. I decided on 33.♗e6 which is the correct move according to Stockfish. |

 | | gawain: How good it feels to have found a winning move, 32 Bxe6, that is both more elegant and more efficient than grandmaster Euwe's game move. |
|

 | | eternaloptimist: <Gawain> Thx for the complement & indeed it does feel good to find a move like ♗xe6! |
