May-02-17  Walter Glattke: Always one piece, 27.Qxa7 Rxa2 28.Bd5 Qd8! only 27.Qxc4 Rxf2 28.Re8+ Kg7 29.Bxd6 Rxg2+
30.Kxg2 Qxd6 or 28.-Nxe8 29.Bxf2
May-02-17  ChessHigherCat: Good puzzle. At first it looks like there are three alternatives, Qe8+ or Re8+ or Qxc4, but only the last one diverts the knight to enable the coup de grĂ¢ce Be4#
May-02-17  agb2002: White has the bishop pair and a pawn for a bishop and a knight.

The knight controls e8. This suggests 27.Qxc4 Nxc4 28.Re8+ Kg7 29.Bf8+ Kg6 (29... Kg(h)8 30.Bh6#) 30.Be4+ Qf5 31.Bxf5+ wins a piece at least.

The alternative 27.Re8+ Kg7 28.Qxc4 fails due to 28... Rb1+ 29.Qf1 (29.Bf1 Nxc4 30.Bf8+ Kg6 and 31.Bd3+ is impossible) 29... Rxf1+.

May-02-17  Iwer Sonsch: A bit too tricky for a Tuesday, I feel like. I also went for 27.Re8+? Kg7 28.Qxc4?? Rb1+! .

Interestingly enough though, 27.Qe8+ is also winning, just on a more difficult basis:

a) 27...Nxe8 28.Rxe8+ Kg7 29.Bf8+ Kg6 30.Be4+ Qf5 31.Bxf5+ Kf6 (11.02 @depth 29)

b) 27...Kg7 28.Qe3! Nb5 29. a4 Qf4 (delaying the loss of material) 30.Qe7! Nd6 31.Be3 Qxg4 32.h3 Qh4 33.Qe5+ f6 34.Qxb2 (11.36 @depth 25).

So if you somehow thought it's Thursday, 27.Qe8+! is the right solution for today's puzzle, leaving White with an even bigger advantage than the Tuesday solution (9.09 @depth 24 after 29.Bf8+ Kg6 30.Be4+ Qf5 31.Bxf5+ Kf6 32.Bb4! Rxb4 33.axb4).

May-02-17  Iwer Sonsch: Both players played pretty solid for a blitz game. Black was equal until the passive 18...Ne8!?, simultaneously missing an opportunity to make it pretty difficult for White (19.Bxc7 Rd7 20.Qe5! Qxe5 21.Bxe5 Bb7! (0.16 @depth 23).
May-02-17  leRevenant: Having bombed out as per <Phony Benoni>, I don't feel too disgraced.
May-02-17  Whitehat1963: Totally missed it.
May-02-17  Carlos0012358: 27.Re8+ is a bad idea because then 27....Kg7 28.Qd1 Nxe8 29.Bd4 Bxa2 30.Bf6+ Bf1....... And white's initial advantage has deteriorated.

27.Qxc4 is the best move....then 27....Nxc4 is not good for black because then 28.Re8+ Kg7 29.Bf8+ Kg6 30.Be4+ Qf5 31.Bxf5+ Kf6 32.Bb4 Rxb4 33.axb4 and white is a Rook and a pawn up and wins easily.

Therefore, finally 27 Qxc4 Rxf2 best continuation for black, then 28.Qa4 Rxa2 29.Bd4 Qd8 30.Qb3 Rd2 31.Be3 Rxg2+ 32.Kxg2 .....although white is still up a Rook and a pawn and eventually wins.

May-02-17  morfishine: <27.Qxc4> deflects the Knight allowing the White rook's entry: 27...Nxc4 28.Re8+ Kg7 29.Bf8+ and now if 29...Kg8, then 30.Bh6# or 29...Kg6 30.Be4+

Nice Combination

*****

May-02-17  malt: 27.Q:c4 N:c4 28.Re8+ Kg7 29.Bf8+ Kg6 30.Be4+ Then looked at 27.Qe8+ N:e8 28.R:e8+ Kg7 29.Bf8+ Kg6 30.Be4+ 27.Re8+ looks risky
May-02-17  mel gibson: DR4 64 bit only played the first move:

27. Qxc4 (27. Qxc4 (♕a4xc4 a7-a6 ♗c5-d4 ♕f6-f4 ♕c4-c3 ♕f4-d2 ♕c3xb2 ♕d2xe1+ ♗g2-f1 h7-h6 ♕b2-b8+ ♘d6-e8 ♗d4-e3 ♔g8-f8 ♕b8-b4+ ♕e1xb4 a3xb4 ♘e8-f6 ♗e3-c5+ ♔f8-e8 ♗f1xa6 ♘f6xg4 a2-a4 ♘g4-f6 d5-d6 c7xd6 ♗c5xd6 ♔e8-d7 ♗d6-f8 ♔d7-e6 ♗a6-c4+) +5.49/15 84)

score for white +5.49 depth 15.

gawain: There are at least three moves that win for White. 27 Re8+ is the weakest. I would say that 27 Qxc4 and 27 Qe8+ both win convincingly enough to count as solutions. Both lead to pretty wins if Black accepts the offered queen. And both lead to not-especially-pretty wins if Black refuses.
May-02-17  notyetagm: <Whitehat1963: Totally missed it.>

I did not think this was that easy.

May-02-17  Iwer Sonsch: On some rare occasions, I wish I could understand <chrisowen>'s thoughts.
May-02-17  paavoh: @Iwer Sonsch: <On some rare occasions, I wish I could understand <chrisowen>'s thoughts.> Take a look at his posts from 4-5 years ago - a big difference. You almost got his ideas back then :-)
May-02-17  swclark25: I also went with Re8+ like Misters <Benoni> and <Sonsch> but I see its fallacy and the improvement of Qxc4.

Agree with <paavoh> and <Sonsch> on understanding the thoughts of <chrisowen>. Today was tougher because of all the bullshine.

May-02-17  schachfuchs: I thought chrisown is a bot?!
May-02-17  swclark25: What happened to <YouRang>? Haven't heard from him in several weeks. I always enjoyed his inputs.
May-02-17  NBZ: <swclark25> Wait so is there a way to decode <chrisowen>'s messages? Like some secret code that only the few know about? I mean the moves all look sensible it's just the annotation in between that's such a mystery (is it just a different language)?
May-02-17  swclark25: I do try hard to understand or decode as you say. I figure there must be some higher form of intel involved to put that many nearly legible phrases together with such fun words in between. <"Hip prince"> and <"peachy lifts"> gotta be fun, right?

OhioChessFan: I'll man up and say I missed a Tuesday, way bad.
May-02-17  dufferps2: I think black would have done better to respond to 27.Qxc4 with 27. ... Kg7. White would follow, I think, with 28.Qd4. White has gained a piece, and black is forced at best to trade queens (28 ... Nb5 would force the queens trade), but it is no quick finish.
May-03-17  patzer2: Here's my look at this week's Tuesday puzzle (27. ?) and game with Stockfish:

For an early Black improvement, instead of 17... Qf5 = Stockfish slightly prefers 17...Re8 when play might go 18.Bf4 Rb6 19.Be3 Ne4 20.Bxe4 Rxe4 21.Bxc5 Rh6 22.Qf3 Re5 23.Rab1 Bb7 24.Be3 Rf6 25.Qe2 Rd6 26.Qxc4 Rexd5 = to (-0.32 @ 26 depth, Stockfish 24081364)

Black's game starts to go bad after <18...Ne8?> allowing <19. Qxc4 to > (+1.43 @ 24 depth, Stockfish 24081364)

Instead, Black can apparently hold it level with 18...Nxd5 when play might go 19.Bxc7 Rd7 20.Qe5 Qxe5 21.Bxe5 Bb7 22.Rac1 Rb6 23.Bf1 f6 24.Bc3 Kf8 25.Bxc4 Rbd6 26.Be1 Nb6 27.Rxd6 Rxd6 28.Bb3 Nd7 29.f4 Be4 30.Bf2 Rc6 31.a4 f5 32.a5 Ke7 33.Ba4 Rc7 = (+0.26 @ 30 depth, Stockfish 24081364)

<27.Qxc4!> This solves the Tuesday, May 2, 2017 chessgames.com puzzle.

My inferior try was 27.Re8+ which wins with difficulty after 27...Kg7

( not 27...Nxe8? 28.Qxe8+ Kg7 29.Qf8+ Kg6 30.Be4+ Qf5 31.Bxf5+ Kf6 32.Bd4# )

28.Qd1! Rb1 29.Qxb1 Nxe8 30.Qc1 Bxa2 31.h4 gxh4 32.Qe3 Qd8 33.Qd2 h3 34.Bf3 h5 35.Qxa2 (+3.69 @ 20 depth, Stockfish 24081364)

<27...Nxc4 28.Re8+ Kg7 29.Bf8+ Kg6 30.Be4+ 1-0>

Black resigns in lieu of 30...Qf5 when play might continue 31.Bxf5+ Kf6 32.Bb4 Rxa2 33.Bc3+ Ne5 34.Bxe5#.

Domdaniel: <chrisowen> starts with a (possibly coherent) thought and then scrambles it - probably ad hoc and subjectively, but the procedure is not unlike the Enigma machine used by Germany during WW2 (and cracked by Alan Turing, among others).

The text we see is almost impossible to decrypt, though a heavy computer assault might do it.
