An Englishman: Good Evening: Have always associated Aronian with brilliant Rook endings, and we can add this one to the collection, even though I have no doubt this game was too difficult for both players to avoid mistakes. Looking forward to the analyses.
Sep-21-17  dehanne: Q vs R was made to look easy.

Richard Taylor: I suppose at that level they study those so it is like checkmating with a Q or two bishops for those of us who can do that...And those things take practice.

I have no doubt that MVL could have done the same with the same ease. But such is life...

Sep-21-17  luzhin: Hardly fair to criticise an Armegeddon game with both sides down to below a minute, but 54...Raa4 would have been a stone cold draw-- and then MVL would have gone through to the final and an automatic place in the Candidates.
Sep-21-17  thegoodanarchist: One of these men could be next CHESS WORLD CHAMPION!

That's what I thought. It's not an easy ending, normally. There is a lot to be learnt from this game.

Sally Simpson: There were a few of these Queen v Rook endings.

I had to do it once OTB in a rated game. I never had a clue what to do technique wise, I was just setting wee traps, then my opponent moved his Rook to the wrong square where a simple tactic picked it up. (phew)

I'm thinking Peter Svidler may be glad he was not in the commentary box for this one.

A memory may have come flooding back. Suspect he would have joked about it.

Gelfand vs Svidler, 2001

offramp: User: Sally Simpson that Gelfand-Svidler game you linked to is another example of the older player having greater technical knowledge.

The players who learnt most of their chess in precomputer days have a much larger neural network of stratagems than their younger rivals.

The Oldies would have had a paper notebook with tips and tricks written in longhand, such as Keep rook on third rank.

The Youngsters would have played 10 games of Q v R, looked at YouTube and that's it.

That's why Anand, Gelfand, Kramnik and Ivanchuk are still leading players.

offramp: White rabbbits! Today's GoTD Title, "My Cup Runneth Overtime", is based on a line from a song by <Fairport Convention>.
Mar-01-19  Cheapo by the Dozen: Interesting that Aronian simplified to a disadvantageous-looking rook ending in a must-win game ... and indeed won. :)

Breunor: Losing move according to Stockfish is 54 Ra8.

54 ... Raa4 is evaluated at 0.00. After Ra8 the evacuation is over +128! I think the reason is pretty clear in retrospect - after Ra8 white has the combination that follows which forces the queen promotion.

Mar-01-19  Patzer Natmas: The game was over by move 38...d4 in my book. I'm not a GM but I remember playing like MVL making bad moves that cost me the game when I had the advantage... I agree with offramp in regards to the older player having greater technical knowledge (I would add technical expertise).
