That's why his only game is an Indian.

Phony Benoni: "Nebraska State Journal", March 28, 1902:

<"M. L. Joyce died yesterday morning, at 6:30 o'clock of heart disease at his home, 645 South Eleventh Street. He had been a sufferer from rheumatism but of late this seemed better when his ailment took the new form that proved fatal. He was ill for three months before his death.

"Mr. Joyce was forty-eight years old and a native of Boston. He came to Iowa in the early 60's, locating at Muscatine. He was married in 1876 after which he came to Nebraska. settling at Unadilla, where he remained for several years in the implement business. He was in the employ of the Missouri Pacific railroad when taken ill.

"During his residence in Lincoln, Mr. Joyce made many warm friends who learned to know his kindly nature, and held him in high regard for his genuine manliness. He was a member of the Lincoln chess club and of the Royal Tribe of Joseph.

"The deceased leaves a wife and three children, Mrs. G. F. Fisher, Harry E. Joyce and Nettie Joyce. He was the brother of Judge M. C. Joyce of Syracuse, Neb. The funeral will occur this afternoon at 3 o'clock at the home,t he internment being in Wyuka.">

That would indicate a birth date of 1853 or 1854..

Jan-17-15  zanzibar: Nice to see the biographical data filled out.

Although Mr. Joyce might take slight umbrage at seeing himself referred to as a member of a "chess club":

<Not A Club.

Unless you are a chess player you have probably never heard of it. If you are a chess player, you know it as the "Lincoln Chess Joint" not the "Lincoln Chess club." Some have tried to call it a club but couldn't get away with it. The remarkable thing is that it has no constitution, no by-laws, no officers, and no fees, and only one rule the rule of the "yawps".>

Jan-17-15  zanzibar: <offramp> Apparently you are correct. There was a rash of stolen wooden Indians in Lincoln, whereupon I found this bit of historical information:

<The only other life sized cigar store Indian in town, who happened to be a lady, stood out in front of P. J. Wohlenberg’s cigar store. Mr. Wohlenberg says that she also was too heavy to be carried away, and that the ones who disappeared regularly from their accustomed places were small. Mr. Wohlenberg’s Indian is safely stored away in his haymow now.>

(haymow = a stack of hay)

The "chess joint" referred to above being Mr. Wohlenberg's cigar store (founded 1882).
