Apr-11-06  Benzol: He recently reprised his Decker role in the New Voyages. Babara Luna (from the episode "Mirror Mirror") played his wife. Is she Will Decker's mother?

keypusher: So who was Commander Matt Decker?

chancho: <Keypusher> Commodore Decker, was a man obsessed with destroying the Planet destroyer."cone thingy" (he lost all of his crew as a result) He wanted to do the same for the Enterprise,(by taking command) but Kirk and Spock eventually stopped him. Decker then stole a shuttle craft, and drove it into the planet destroyer. (killing himself in the process) Kirk saw that it damaged the thing somewhat, and decided to drive Deckers damaged starship into it. (Kirk had the sense to get himself beamed out of that ship) The resultant explosion, destroyed the planet thingy, and they went back to playing galactic chess.(Kirk beat Spock as usual)

keypusher: If he was a commodore, didn't he outrank Kirk? Couldn't he just order Kirk to obey him?

chancho: <Keypusher> He did use his rank to take over the Enterprise. Kirk later had him removed from command, because Decker's obsession to destroy the Doomsday machine showed him to be unfit to command.

chancho: Some info on this american actor:

<Has been profiled in Chess Life magazine twice (he is a tournament player with a penchant for unusual openings; one of his positions had turned up in a Chess Life problem column before the magazine interviewed him). The second time, in 1988, he appeared with his friend Claude Akins (who had been on Murder She Wrote as Captain Ethan Craig the season before Windom became Dr. Seth Hazlitt) playing a game in Windom's back yard. During an interview for the article, Windom said that he planned to build a foot-tall metal Rook (the castle-shaped piece) in the back yard, "and one day my ashes will be buried underneath it.".>

offramp: The name Windom has another televisual chess connection: ex-FBI agent Windom Earle played a game of chess 'with human pieces' in the series Twin Peaks.

However, "cone thingy" doesn't work as a GOTD title, so cg.com used "doomsday machine"
