Apr-29-05  fantasticplastic: George Hammond was a champion of New England for many years but is probably best remembered for losing (along with his clueless Allies) a consultation game with Morphy, having played ...b5 way too premautrely while defending a Spanish Game.

GrahamClayton: Hammond was acknowledged as the champion of New England from 1845 up to his death in 1881, defeating in matches for the title players such as Rabuski, Keyes, Preston Ware, Macallister, HN Stone, JW Stone and George Washburn Smalley.

After being held to a draw by a Boston Chess Club member in an offhand game, Hammond put a notice on a wall of the club, stating "George Hammond, the chess champion of New England, would henceforth play no chess with any man who would not accept the odds of pawn and move."

Oct-22-13  Karpova: The 'British Chess Magazine' Almanac (p. 1, March 1882) gives his birthdate as March 4, 1816.

The date given here (March 6, 1815) is the one given on p. 161 of Gaige's 'Chess Personalia' (paperback) who cites p. 524 of Vol. 12 of the 'National Cyclopedia of American Biography'.
