HeMateMe: That's sounds wise. If you're going to keep chasing skirts, don't get married--yet.

Jerry West said "Kurt Rambis and his pals would be out partying. Then, they would drive over to Wilt's house on Mulholland Drive, and knock on his door, trying anything to get him to come outside". Wilt lived the quiet life. Supposedly that house he had was amazing, very interesting architecuture, built for a giant Greek god.

Jan-18-12  King Death: <HeHateMe> I don't think Torre did, he just didn't want to get involved with the groupies who were in love with the uniform.

HeMateMe: I think it was the uniform, not the Torres brothers...
Jan-25-12  Jim Bartle: I remember Whitey Herzog saying Joe Torre was a great player but a lousy catcher. He said the fans in centerfield knew his number better than the fans behind home plate.
May-01-12  Whitehat1963: I predict an Oklahoma City - Miami Heat final now that Derrick Rose is out for the rest of the season. A Kevin Durant v. LeBron/D. Wade final is good for the league.
May-23-12  Whitehat1963: Better luck to you and the Lakers next year, Kobe. (Okay, I really don't wish that for you at all.)
May-23-12  Jim Bartle: Kobe is going to have a lot of new teammates next year. The Lakers might get Dwight Howard somehow; that would be interesting.
May-23-12  Whitehat1963: God forbid!

WannaBe: In his spare time away from running the Dodgers, Maigc Johnson said he would like to have one more run at a Championship, with Kobe.

Plus with Walter Alston at the helm, Magic's got nothing to worry about. Al Campanis will run the club and get all necessary players.

HeMateMe: Gasol and Bynum are still two of the better big men in the league. Kobe shoots too much, maybe he's the one who has to go.

They need some help at point guard, someone who can penetrate and pass to the big guys. Bryant is uncoachable, he'll just keep putting up shots unless the coach sticks his ass on the bench.

May-24-12  Jim Bartle: Gasol and Bynum are good players, but inconsistent, and Kobe is became more off-and-on this year. He's had 30-point games where he took 25 or more shots, so he's really not doing the team that much good.

I think Kobe believes that since he's worked so hard on his game all these years, he has the right to be the guy at all times. This doesn't appear to be true any more, though he is still a dynamite player at both ends.

I read somewhere the Lakers might somehow end up with Deron Williams, which would end their point-guard problems for several years.

The Lakers did win a championship in 1972 without a point guard at all. Jerry West did the job, but of course was really a shooting guard, and Gail Goodrich was the other, a pure shooter nad not much of a passer.

HeMateMe: Maybe Wilt was the point guard that year; he led the league in assists in 1972.

West, Goodrich and Jim McMillan would put up 75 points, and let Wilt rebound and pass them the ball. A shame, maybe Wilt could have won more championships had he passed the ball more.

May-24-12  Jim Bartle: Wilt led the league in assists in 1968 when he was with Philadelphia. In 1972 the leader was Lenny Wilkens, and West was second, believe it or not.

The problem with Wilt was he rarely played all facets of the game in a balanced manner which led to consistent winning. He did in '67 of course, and I saw him do it with the Warriors in '64, but in general he was so stats-conscious that he wanted one or two really big numbers, rather than all-around excellence.

HeMateMe: I wish I'd gotten to see Jerry West, Oscar Robertson and Elgin Baylor when they were in their primes. Cousy and Bill Russell, as well. Basketball just wasn't on TV, until the early 70s.

Frank Deford says that the change in media coverage began when the Knicks had great teams in the early 70s. New York City being the media center of the USA, when the Knicks started to get good, the NBA began to appear on national television.

I never saw Bill Russell play. I didn't see Oscar till he was with the Bucks. I did get to see a number of Lakers games on TV in the early 70s, because they were always in the playoffs. West was quite a terror even at age 32, and blended very well with Goodrich, McMillan and Wilt.

May-24-12  Jim Bartle: "West was quite a terror even at age 32, and blended very well with Goodrich, McMillan and Wilt."

Don't forget Happy doing the dirty work.

I did see all West, Baylor and Robertson play, and from seats close to the court at the USF gym. A great place to watch basketball.

Those were three great players. I'd say Robertson was the best for the first few years, but he faded around 1968 or so. He was far from the old Oscar when he was traded to Milwaukee.

Baylor was close, brilliant, with an odd, finesse style, until hurting his knee in the mid-60s. He was still excellent, but not the same as before.

West was a notch below the other two until the mid-to-late 60s, just a little behind. But he maintained or even improved his level of play into the 70s, and ended up being the best of the three overall.

West is probably still the second-best two-guard in NBA history, just a bit better than Kobe. I'm part of a tiny minority, but I think Robertson in his first seven years or so was better than Magic, best point guard of all time.

May-29-12  Whitehat1963: Hard to make these comparisons because of the way the rules on palming and travelling are basically ignored. The way the ball is dribbled today probably would have led to travelling violations on EVERY SINGLE POSSESSION during the 1960s. The ability to palm the ball with impunity is what makes the Oscar Robertson and Jerry West of old game films seem so weak compared to palmers extraordinare like Allen Iverson, Kobe Bryant, Michaael Jordan, and Tim Hardaway, et. al.

HeMateMe: Yeah, the crossover dribble is basically a palming violation each time.

I was watching the Spurs/OK Thunder tonight. Spurs are now up 2-0. They play so well as a unit, under control. Duncan has lost a step, but is still close to his prime. Unless the Spurs get old and tired real fast, they will be in the finals. It's fun watching this center the Thunder have, a guy from Africa. This dude gets up there; he had two blocks on seven footer Duncan, in the first half.

Hard to figure if Boston has a real chance against the Celtics. They looked ok in the first half, then fell apart. Ainge hasn't replaced Perkins or Big Baby to a healthy degree.

The Celts will have to play very low error ball, improve their footwork on defense and get some bench scoring, to keep up with Miami. A Miami/Spurs final looks likely, should be very good.

Jul-04-12  NakoSonorense: Steve Nash -> Lakers

This would have been a killer trade 10 or even 5 years ago, but I'm not sure what to think right now.

Oct-31-12  Jim Bartle: The great new Lakers team lost their opener, at home, to Dallas last night. Nash apparently did none of the things he did for Phoenix for so many years.

Most interesting to me is that Kobe went 11 for 14 and they still lost. Fewer than usual shots for him, of course, and he took no free throws, which has to mean he wasn't playing aggressively.

perfidious: <Jim> If Nash still has something left, maybe Bryant will realise he does not have to do it all, every night. Two years ago, we saw how Heat struggled early while trying to integrate all their talent. Once they got there, the only thing that stopped them was themselves, come to the finals.
Oct-31-12  Jim Bartle: That's likely. I still think no free throws for Kobe, only 14 shots, and seven points and four assists for Nash is strange. The Mavs played without Nowitzki and their starting center Kaman, too, so they didn't look like a powerhouse. But let's wait and see.

perfidious: <Jim> Surprising indeed that Bryant managed to play 35 minutes when there was doubt he would even be in the lineup. He may have been limited in some way; time will tell.
May-06-13  dumbgai: After Saturday night's boxing match between Floyd Mayweather and Robert Guerrero, Kobe Bryant called Mayweather "Bobby Fischer with gloves".
Jun-01-13  Whitehat1963: Is it time to take these discussions to a "James" page?
