Kibitzer's Corner
Nov-03-05  KingG: I wonder if this guy's name influenced his decision to take up Benoni.
Nov-03-05  weary willy: <I wonder if this guy's name influenced his decision to take up Benoni.> ... er... which he didn't
Nov-03-05  KingG: <weary willy> Oops, how embarrassing. I just looked at the most played openings and saw the Benoni without checking whether it was with White or Black.

Of course, this isn't a complete collection of his games, so who knows, perhaps he did use it.

Benzol: Not exactly the most flattering of photos I've seen.
Feb-19-09  WhiteRook48: that photo looked a bit over-extended

Richard Taylor: Photo taken when he was older but he has an interesting face.

I think he probably looked good as a young man. It is interesting how people look quite different in reality as against a photograph. For in reality, so to speak, a person is mostly moving.

MissScarlett: Like Fischer, he always carried a chess board inside his jacket.

perfidious: Was this player a son of sorrow?
Aug-21-24  avenant69: Despite that biblical name and his looks, there was no sadness or sorrow about this Benony, he had a fine sense of humour.

Best example of this is when a couple of years after the Gudmundsson Memorial, which earned him the nickname "RĂºssabani" (Slayer of Russians), a fan ran into him and said: 'Benni, that was quite a feat when you managed to draw against Taimanov, no less than the City of Moscow champion in person'

'Nothing to it my friend' quipped Benni, 'after all I was the reigning champion of the City of Reykjavik myself at that time' !
