Apr-21-09 | | whiskeyrebel: I've felt for a long time that our bootlegger buddy probably hired somebody with real chess skill to help him with the chess side of things. Anybody care to venture a guess who that may be? Hhhmm? |
|
Apr-21-09 | | JonDSouzaEva: <whiskeyrebel> Personally I think it was all Trice's work, with the aid of Mr Fritz. I certainly don't think Lawrence Day had anything to do with the writing or publishing of the book. Trice clearly has a contact in Canada, probably a female relative (sister-in-law?), but as far as I can ascertain Lawrence Day is guilty only of extreme gullibility. |
|
Apr-21-09 | | whiskeyrebel: Whoa! I didn't have Mr. Day in mind at all. I can see how you might have gotten that impression, but I really was just asking. I would think that the hired gun (if there was one) would be relatively obscure and desperate for a buck. IM Day is a very respectable chess figure and not the sort to be involved in such chicanery (although I think he's wrong concerning the boot). |
|
Apr-21-09
 | | jessicafischerqueen: Hi <Whiskey>!
I also find it very hard to believe that <IM Day> is involved in anything shady. Actually I think it's impossible. He's a real chessplayer for cripe sake.
And he's from Canada! |
|
Apr-21-09 | | Jim Bartle: That redhotpawn link is a gold mine!
For example, Trice writes:
"You don't have to share my enthusiam. But the mother of the 16 year-old winner last year that is going to U Conn for free for 2 years would really, really disagree with you." Isn't it curious he doesn't just name the kid instead of saying his mother is really happy? He doesn't want to make any claims that can easily be disproven, so he leaves out the key information. |
|
Apr-21-09 | | JonDSouzaEva: There was a time when Trice used to send messages from the pretend participants of his non-existent Gothic Chess tournaments. Here is an e-mail from "someone" who e-mailed me when I suggested that these scholarship tournaments were a figment of Trice's imagination: On 11/7/06, Jack Schloze <checkandmate_2000@yahoo.com> wrote:
Aloha to all,
My name is Mark Kelly E Mailing from Hawaii. I just wanted to say Ed forwarded me some of the mails from all your's group. Jon does not know what he's talking about. My son played in a tournament in 2003 at one the biggest darn gatherins I'd ever seen. Kids everywhere. Nicely run, a dash of kaos and such, but that's about to be expected and whatnot. My boy didn't do that good with but 3 wins of the lot of games. By there was more than 1000 kids there, damn near 2000 you ask me. The prize was a year scholarship for college to the winner. And when you live in Hawaii like we do, a trip to mainland is a bit much. We did it. We were there. You can't say we weren't, don't care who you are. Harbormaster Mark Kelly |
|
Apr-21-09 | | JonDSouzaEva: Here is my reply to the e-mail from "Harbormaster Mark Kelly": Dear Mark,
I googled your e-mail address "checkandmate_2000" and found three
hits, two of which are from Yahoo groups for men who like being
dominated by tall women.
Here's one message from checkandmate_2000:
(start)
Re: TallGoddess Morphs?
Just for your general information:
TallGoddess is not married to James. james is her website
admin and "general all around guy". I have spoken to
her on the phone (she lives in Germany) and she
recently (last fall) did a VERY soft porn shoot in Los
Angeles.
She is a really great gal with a fantasic sense of
humor.
That's all for now :)
(end)
I found this interesting because if you visit www.gothicchess.com, the
first thing that hits you are the pictures of the 6'5" "tournament
director", Alexis Skye.
I'm sure this is just a coincidence.
Take care,
Jon |

|
Apr-21-09 | | Jim Bartle: I've wondered from the start why Trice made such a big deal of hanging around a gorgeous 6'5" model. I mean, who cares? |
|
Apr-21-09 | | GeauxCool: <JDSE> Your comparison between the graphics used on the gothichess website and the graphics used in M61MG was spot on.
http://www.chesstalk.info/forum/sho... So what is it that makes <Fat Lady> believe the ebay.ca seller is a Canadian woman? |
|
Apr-21-09 | | JonDSouzaEva: <GeauxCool> I don't know anything about the eBay auction. I wasn't following the 61 Memorable Games saga at the time and didn't notice it until a few months later. Regarding the Canadian woman being involved - this is the address that the veryrarebooks.blogspot.com person was trying to get people to send an international money order to when he was attempting to flog copies of "My 61 Memorable Games": Eda Schroeter
Kanata North
PO Box 72064

Apr-21-09 | | GeauxCool: <JDSE> Maybe it's a relay? This is what Google Earth shows:
Lone Star Texas Grill
4048 Carling Avenue
Kanata, ON K2K 1Y1, Canada

As a non-canadian, I really don't know what the difference is between the 1Y1 and 2P4, but the view doesn't appear residential. Google Earth is a free download: http://earth.google.com/ Seems like a good contact for more information. |

Apr-21-09 | | capatal: <Ed Trice no longer dares to appear on CG.com>: Nowadays there's just too much egg on his soup strainer. |
|
Apr-21-09 | | Jim Bartle: Since the Great Gothic One has been absent for more than a week, here's a fix for those suffering from withdrawal: March 15 on the Hans Berliner page, commenting on a negative review of Berliner's "The System": "Berliner's credibility has to be respected, and Silman's review has to be at least suspect. After all, it would be a "conflict of interest", would it not, for him to tout a book by another fellow chess author?" Truly a ridiculous claim. Under Trice's conditions half the book reviews in history would be "suspect." |

 | | chancho: <Karpov's autograph is easily obtainable and appears on many items such as books, photos, FDC's, etc. There has been one Karpov signature observed in the past that was not authentic. Apr-22-09 | | GeauxCool: <robmtchl - sponsor> He did that to the original Online Chess Library? That's sad news. At least you guys should be glad it was a monetary loss, look what he did to embarrass Frank Camaratta: "Reykjavik II"
http://tinyurl.com/cjguh5
Does it make you wonder what kind of scam was designed to get this accomplished? Knowing his paypal situation, I could almost speculate that his trips to Iceland were sponsored...that 'Reykjavik II' is where it all began. |

 | | chancho: Was checking the Canadian site <Chesstalk> and found this from Jan 13th 2009: Art Hamilton: (banned)
<Louis, if you said you'd bring $3000 to me in person for chess book, I'd think you were a policeman. Maybe you scared her off. Why didn't you just agree to buy 1 in person?> Jan 14th 2009
Louis Morin: <Art, I emailed her during the ebay auction and several weeks after. The auction was for all books she had, not only one. At the time, she was not interested to sell only one book. The 30 books I was ready to buy was the very minimum she was willing to sell. At first, her husband was supposed to bring the books in Montreal, but for some reason changed his mind. Then came several nonsense claims (for example, most books were put to garbage in a shopping mall) before she asked me to send money by mail to a post office box. Anyway, if the book is real and you could get a copy, congratulations! But what a poor bookseller she was! She acted as if she was selling illegal stuff and her life was being threathened.> <No, I will not buy a single copy for $400 or $600.> Jan 15th 2009
Administrator Larry Bevand:
<Louis,>
<In my opinion, the whole thing is a scam...and you did well to keep your money in your jeans> <I doubt that the fellow who recently posted here under the name of Art...is using his-her real name.> <I will do some research in the next 48 hours.> <Larry>
Ye olde send some money to a post office box, and get ripped off. Art Hamilton banned... hey, that's <hackmate>... a certain inventor... |

Apr-23-09 | | GeauxCool: <All> I'm gathering correspondence from chess enthusiasts, including Louis, who had originally interacted with the ebay bookseller. I won't write about my rationale, but I decided that I might be able to collect enough samples in order to compare writing styles. Hopefully, this is the first of many: http://susanpolgar.blogspot.com/200... <Jud McCranie said...

Learn More. <Dear <Jud McCranie>Bobby started this project after the United Bank of Switzerland
froze his account with the $3,000,000 in winnings from his
1992 match with Spassky. This long legal battle drained his
reserves and has left him in financial trouble. His unfavorable
temperment alienated some of his life long friends also, those
who could have been in a position to help him the most. As a
result, friends of Jinky (she married Bobby and carried his baby)
encouraged him to "do a book project" so he will at least have
money. This collective organization formed "Fischer Media" to
raise funds to have 25,000 copies of the book printed. The
publisher is Fischer Media. Only the first 100 "special edition"
copies are being made available through the auction. The rest
will be marked "second edition" and none will be available before
February 2008.

The ebay seller registered on Dec 10, and expected the auction to close on Dec 19th. <Ed Trice> took vacation from Dec 8th to Dec 17th.
