jnpope: And why doesn't either "Brand" show up in the Player Directory ?

MissScarlett: The Player Drectory isn't exhaustive.

You should search for players in the Player field, not the Search bar at the top.

jnpope: Well, color my face red for not using Advanced search to search for a single name.

No more Simple(ton) searching for me.

Thanks for the tip!

jnpope: I guess I was expecting far too much from the "Simple" search box. Although I still think if there is a single name in the simple search box the results returned should be the same as a single player name search from the Advanced search box...

Time to fire up the Greasemonkey plugin and remove that Simple search box from this website forever.

jnpope: I've got an interesting set of exhibition games to upload, but I'm not sure how to categorize things.

Here's the breakdown of the exhibition. Kieseritzky and Harrwitz are playing a double blindfold game against each other, while at the same time each is also playing blindfold against different opponents who are giving Harrwitz and Kieseritzky knight odds.

Basically the three games are:
Harrwitz (sans voir)-Kieseritzky (sans voir)
Mongredien (giving Nb1)-Kieseritzky (sans voir)
Perigal (giving Nb1)-Harrwitz (sans voir)

Would you call this Event a "double-double blindfold knight odds simultaneous exhibition"? Ideally all three games should be from the same Event but is something like this worthy of it's own tid?

How does one indicate which players are blindfold? I usually add a "(sans voir)" modifier in the name field, but that would probably break things here... do people just add a comment in the gamescore body? Does CG allow for comments before white's first move?

Pawn and Two: <Tabanus> They look great. Thank you for all of your hard work. I am currently working on a couple of more old tournaments. One of these tournaments will require many additional games to be added to our database. Fortunately, I have all of the required information, now to just find the time.

Tabanus: Voted in by <Ohio>! German Championship (1938) and German Championship (1939).

The latter has two different Rudolf Keller, fix request sent.

Tabanus: Or are they the same Rudolf Keller? If he died in 1993, he could have played in 1989, but not in 1994.

Telemus: During my ongoing (yes!) work on the Vienna Chess Masters 1894, I came across of Karl Eisenbach, on whose page I dropped now a summary on what I know about him. I mention it here, because there are some open questions.

First, it would be nice to find a source for his win against Marco.

Second, the partly contradicting information on his date of birth and his profession should be cleared.

jnpope: In games played by various automatons, should we be distinguishing the automaton by some type of make or model identifier?

There was more than one Turk (I know there was the original and a smaller New York knock-off version as well as another version reportedly made in Europe) and at least four Ajeebs (Hooper made two of different sizes, then there was made a Chicago knock-off, and a New York knock-off).

jnpope: For a long time I thought Frederick Paul Zerega was a son of Augustus Zerega. How many men named "A. Zerega" had exactly nine children and would die in 1888?

I spent some time throwing together a couple of bios.

For Augustus I interwove the two sources together to try and create a cohesive story about his life.

For Frederick there wasn't a ton of material to be found about his life (far more exists on his brother John Pierre). Interestingly the family business they started was still in operation in 1982, although it appears they moved into New Jersey at some point.

jnpope: <In games played by various automatons, should we be distinguishing the automaton by some type of make or model identifier?>

I have a couple of games played against the New York version of the Turk (created by piano maker Daniel Walker and/or his brother John Walker). It was a replica of Maelzel's Turk, smaller in size and the bottom drawer could be fully drawn out (apparently Maelzel's could only be partially pulled out).

Do I submit these games as being against The Turk (Automaton) and add something to the bio section?

Or do we create a second Turk automaton entry with its own bio?

And should we then not deal with the multiple versions of Ajeeb (Automaton) the same way, i.e. by creating multiple entires or expanding the single bio to better explain the history of the multiple Ajeebs?

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

jnpope: Another question with Automatons, if the operator is known do we omit the automaton altogether, as in W Lewis vs NN, 1818 ? (who's opponent according to some sources was Frederick Lokes Slous).

Or should this game be relisted with the Turk name with the operator being noted in the annotations? In a way the operator is giving his opponent the "odds of comfort" so I would think the Turk identifier would be historically important.

Apr-25-20  cameosis: <Pawn and Two>hi, i have found your responses/comments to zanzibar’s nottingham 1886 research from 2016 in this thread recently, while trying to close some source gaps in regard to the tournament games.

could you tell me if gillam mentions any contemporary / primary / print sources for the following games:

[Round "3"]
[White "Hanham, James Moore"]
[Black "Rynd, Porterfield"]

[Round "4"]
[White "Rynd, Porterfield"]
[Black "Thorold, Edmund"]

[Round "6"]
[White "Zukertort, Johannes"]
[Black "Rynd, Porterfield"]

[Round "8"]
[White "Schallopp, Emil"]
[Black "Hanham, James Moore"]

i have found sources that haven’t been previously mentioned (at least to my knowledge) for the following:

[Round "1"]
[White "Thorold, Edmund"]
[Black "Taubenhaus, Jean"]
Nottingham Daily Express 1886.08.04, p. 4

[Round "3"]
[White "Bird, Henry Edward"]
[Black "Burn, Amos"]
Amos Burn: A Chess Biography, p. 231

[Round "8"]
[White "Pollock, William H. K."]
[Black "Thorold, Edmund"]
The Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News 1886, p. 350

[Round "9"]
[White "Bird, Henry Edward"]
[Black "Schallopp, Emil"]
Deutsche Schachzeitung 1886, p. 355

thanks in advance!

Always best to answer a question with another question - should all games with the automatons be classed as exhibition?

Couldn't one argue that an automaton was an exhibit when at a fête or when displayed in a dime museum?

Doesn't that, by definition, make any performance an exhibition?

Apr-25-20  cameosis: or the other way round:

were there any formal matches that were contested with an automaton, or has it »entered« any tournaments?
