jnpope: Does anyone know if A Wladimiroff turns up in the Russian chess literature before he moved to Berlin (where I think he was a medical student and eventually became a doctor).
Feb-21-24  stone free or die: Thx - moved <Dawbarn--Mieses> game over to BNA finds:

Feb-21-24  stone free or die: Aside - I found a photograph of Tietjen here:

https://cplorg.contentdm.oclc.org/d...

It's from an album (or collection of albums) of many amateur players held by CPL.

My question is - can I download the volume, or even issue in one go?

At the moment it seems I only can download one image at a time.

Feb-21-24  stone free or die: RE: <A. Wladimoroff> - (А. Владимиров)

That's a tough nut to crack, <jn>, at least so far (for me).

I did see there was an Dr. Alexander A. Wladimoroff (or Vladimorov, pick your fav transliteration) from St. Peterburg's <Imperial Institute for Experimental Medicine> who traveled often to Germany often.

https://books.google.com/books?id=n...

He might have been a student back ~1870.

This is merely a suspicion as there's no direct chess connection that I currently know of.

Feb-21-24  stone free or die: <often to Germany often> oftenoft!
Feb-21-24  BarakSaltz: Regarding Wladimiroff, it could be valuable to consider Russian orthographic reforms, notably the 1917-8 one.

Google Books has far more 19th century Zukertort results off of "Цукертортъ" than off of "Цукерторт".

Feb-21-24  stone free or die: <BarakSaltz> would you have alternative spellings to try out?

RE: Dr. A.A. Vladimirov - he's too young to be the chess player:

<Alexander Alexandrovich Vladimirov (1862-1942) [Владимиров, Александр Александрович] - Russian and Soviet immunologist, doctor of medicine and veterinarian, professor and director of the Institute of Experimental Medicine, actual state councilor , honored worker of science of the RSFSR [1] . Organizer of Russian healthcare during the First World War and the Civil War, the first years of Soviet power [2] .>

  jnpope: <Berliner Adreß-Buch: für das Jahr 1877>, p887, gives:
"Wladimiroff, A., Rentier, Blumeshof 9. Pt. E. 1-2."

Rentier is French for a man of means (either that or he's a German reindeer!).

I think I was taken down a Google book rabbit hole with "Dr. A. Wladimiroff" from https://books.google.com/books?id=f... (1882) which has been misbound with some 1900s pamphlets.

Feb-21-24  BarakSaltz: The 1917-8 Russian orthography reform largely did away with following many words/names with a hard sign.

"Владимировъ" yields many results.

jnpope: <jnpope: I'd also accept a Berlin city directory showing only one Hugo Munk living there between 1871 and 1884 as corroborating evidence.>

There is only one "H. Munk" listed in the <Berliner Adreß-Buch: für das Jahr 1877>, p551.

Feb-22-24  WilhelmThe2nd: <jnpope> Just to be clear, are you saying that A. Wladimiroff, the chessplayer, did not attend medical school and was not a doctor? Genealogical sources for Dr. Alexander Alexandrovich Vladimirov (1862-1942), mentioned above, state that his father was a rentier/kaufmann. So it is possible that his father was the chessplayer in Berlin.

jnpope: <<jnpope> Just to be clear, are you saying that A. Wladimiroff, the chessplayer, did not attend medical school and was not a doctor?>

Correct. The age doesn't match for him to be the medical student born in 1862 if he was playing Zukertort as early as April 1869.

But he could possibly be the father of Dr. Alexander Alexandrovich Vladimirov. More research is definitely required.
