OBIT: Krush and Kovalyov are stuck in a marathon game. Krush has an extra pawn, but there aren't many pawns left, along with a set of rooks and opposite-colored bishops. Their next round is only two hours away - and, wouldn't you know it, their opponents are the two guys tied for first. Krush plays Mikhalevski and Kovalyov plays Short.
Jul-01-12  Edmontonchessclub: The Krush-Kovalyov marathon ended in a draw.

Next round in 30 minutes (8 PM Eastern, midnight GMT).

Jul-01-12  Shams: GM Short should pick up Haessel's dinner tab tonight. Quite a bit of help from an unexpected source.

Nigel Short: I don't know about dinner but I will buy him a pair of trousers, if he promises to wear them...
Jul-02-12  PhilFeeley: <OBIT> "A Major Haessel" <CG> should use that for the headline on this game!
Jul-02-12  Shams: What is he wearing, a dirndl?

OBIT: Krush just defeated Mikhalevski. Her comeback from the brink of defeat was utterly astonishing!

Nigel Short: <shams> Shorts. He is dressed for the running track, not a chess tournament...

OBIT: So, Short finishes clear first if he wins his last game, while Kovalyov (two points back) and Mikhalevski (one point back) play each other. I presume Kovalyov, with the White pieces, throws caution to the wind, while Mikhalevski, who has had devastating losses the last two rounds, tries to calm his nerves.
Jul-02-12  wordfunph: heart-stopping 58-move victory by Krush against Mikhalevski, beautiful game!
Jul-02-12  Shams: <Nigel Short> Were the shorts at least tastefully oversized, with palm trees?

Good luck tomorrow. Are you staying on the continent afterwards?

Jul-02-12  Edmontonchessclub: Robert Gardner has just earned his first IM norm! Well done.
Jul-02-12  Edmontonchessclub: The final round starts in about 3 hours (1 PM eastern, 5 PM GMT)
Jul-02-12  HAPERSAUD: knowing dale, the shorts are probably ridiculously short
Jul-02-12  parmetd: Go Short!
Jul-02-12  achieve: Short's "going", alright...

Men wearing shorts during tournament play is quite not alright, good point, but women wearing them seems more than acceptible, in july.

HeMateMe: All fashion policing aside, the fans weren't shorted out of a good chess game.
Jul-02-12  DanielBryant: I nearly always wear shorts to summer tournaments. Comfort is more important than showing off, and I imagine I would feel the same way if I were a GM.

Sneaky: I saw GM Boris Gulko at a tournament in Florida once and I was quite pleased to see him wearing Birkenstock sandals.

And what is this? V Mikhalevski vs I Krush, 2012. Doesn't Irina know that she's not supposed to beat a GM from the Black side of the board? The Chessbookie leg's just started, and there goes my money :D

Jul-02-12  MarkFinan: Under the normal points scoring system Kovalyov and Mikhalevski would be joint second right now! And that chessbookie stung me too, especially with Short drawing his last game..
Jul-02-12  Shams: Short has won. Krush is a piece up in a simple ending.

And Nigel walks away with the hardware, as is proper. Congratulations to Gardner for the IM norm!

Jul-02-12  AgentRgent: And Irina does it! Way to go!
Jul-02-12  PhilFeeley: <Shams> I'm not sure it was such a simple ending. Black held on for a long time.

HeMateMe: Funny how chess is. Irina Krush pumelled Mikhalevski, who finished second, but she couldn't beat some of the lesser players.
Jul-03-12  Edmontonchessclub: The tournament is over!

We had an after-party (drinks paid by the Edmonton Chess Club) attended by all the GMs, IMs Krush and Piasetski, some of the local players plus Organizers (ahem) and spectators.

GM Short, GM Mikhalevski, IMs Krush and Piasetski have all said that they want to come back next year for the 8th Edmonton International...so that's a good sign for a first-time Organizer of this tourney.

I had to leave the dinner early to catch a plane to Arkansas (of all places), but luckily my girlfriend packed the WRONG PASSPORT so I have time to write this comment in the back of a taxi, trying to get my passport and get back to the airport in time... I love her, but it was the wrong passport! :)

Anyway, the tournament went as well as I could have hoped. I'll definitely be back next year, here on Chessgames.com for the 8th edition of this tournament. In the meantime, I'm sure I'll be commenting/arguing about the major tournaments posted here. See you then!
