Jul-29-07  Karpova: Yes, he adds much to theory on opening lines in which opening theory just reaches as far as to move 13.
Jul-29-07  whiteshark: <AlexandraThess> / <Karpova>

Andersson was a great player, no doubt!
Once there were times when his games started at move 40. But playing like in this tournament is ... [I don't know / bezahlter Sonderurlaub ?]

Jul-29-07  percyblakeney: Another win for Korchnoi, 6/8 with one round to go. Andersson defended well against Stojanovic and the game wasn't drawn until the 50th move.
Jul-30-07  gmgomes: Last round will start within some moments and Korchnoi has white against Ilinic. live games at: http://www.skbanjaluka.com/turnir.p...

I hope I am wrong, but considering that this is the last round, a quick draw here is quite possible.

Jul-30-07  percyblakeney: Also interesting to see if Andersson having white against a 2300 player will have some effect on the length of the game...
Jul-30-07  gmgomes: <I hope I am wrong, but considering that this is the last round, a quick draw here is quite possible.> I was not wrong; draw agreed in 14 moves; anyway congratulations to both players.

Let´s see if Ulf will surprise us with a win, or at least a draw in 60 moves.

Jul-30-07  percyblakeney: No surprise from Andersson, 11 moves today.
Jul-30-07  gmgomes: <No surprise from Andersson, 11 moves today.> I think Ulf wants to break the record of Capablanca => 8 years without a loss.

If he manages to brake that record, he will also brake the number of years without a win.

Jul-30-07  WarmasterKron: <all draws this year, except for two games (wins against 2100 rated opponents).>

How many other GMs can claim to be undefeated this year?

Jul-30-07  Kangaroo: <gmgomes: Last round will start within some moments and Korchnoi has white against Ilincic. ... I hope I am wrong, but considering that this is the last round, a quick draw here is quite possible.>

You are 100% right! It is a draw already. Korchnoi in his young age would have fought till the very end and perhaps won the tournament. Pragmatic goals have overturned his habits at the end!

Jul-30-07  percyblakeney: A young Kasparov won this tournament with a two point margin in 1979. He would probably not have guessed then that Korchnoi would share first in the same event 28 years later, even if the tournament is far from as strong as it was back then.

SwitchingQuylthulg: Yes, Korchnoi is 60 years older now than Kasparov was when he won in '79...
Jul-31-07  percyblakeney: Andersson had some short draws also in Banja Luka 1979 (in 9, 12, 13, 13, 14, 15 and 16 moves), the main difference being that he also won a few games (and that the opposition was much stronger).
Jul-31-07  Marvol: <percyblakeney: The end of days will be preceded by a dark sun rising, discussion without name calling on the Topalov and Kramnik pages, and a decisive game between Andersson and Ribli.>

I am still pondering about which of these events is the most likely to happen... :S

Jul-31-07  WarmasterKron: My money's on the dark sun, personally.
Aug-01-07  madlydeeply: YEAHH Korchnoi!!! He's the baddest of the baddass moefoes.
Aug-02-07  VargPOD: Well, despite being The Ultimate Drawmaster, Andersson still draws attention (no pun intended). Almost all kibitzing on this tournament concerns him!
Aug-04-07  brankat: Too bad the Super GM N.Short played in Montreal (placed 10th), instead of in Banja Luka. Then the kibitzing attention would have been split 50/50.
Aug-04-07  pawnofdoom: And Andersson draws every game again. After all, his bio says "He can be regarded as the all-time drawing master among the top GMs." but then again these aren't really the top GMs
Aug-09-07  MadBishop: Bravo Korchnoi! Nice to see the YOUNG man still hanging with the best! ... And beating them!

valiant: <Karpova wrote: His opponents fear him so much that they feel relieved when he offers a draw. Only some ignorants go on playing then but all the other respectful players are happy to get away with a draw. End quote.> So you are saying that in most cases it is Ulf Andersson who makes the draw offer? Source please...
Aug-17-07  Karpova: It took a long time but chessbase finally came up with a report: http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail...
Aug-17-07  percyblakeney: <Many years ago – in 1979 to be precise – the Soviet Chess Federation sent a 16-year-old boy to play in this world-class event, thinking it was a youth tournament>

They actually sent a 15-year-old boy, he had his 16th birthday during the tournament... The tournament table given by ChessBase and other sources, like Chessmetrics, give Andersson 9/15.

Looking closer at the original tournament table one can see that Andersson actually had 9.5/15 (Bukic may have forfeited his game against Andersson since it is impossible to find and later sources give it as a draw):

http://www.skbanjaluka.com/turnir.p...

Aug-17-07  waddayaplay: The difference between the two crosstables is actually a win vs a draw against Marjanovic. Here on chessgames it is a win for Andersson Ulf Andersson vs Marjanovic, 1979 and that is how the official site has it too, but the chessbase crosstable has it as a draw.
Oct-06-16  diagonal: Overview of the legendary Banja Luka series:
http://www.chessdiagonals.ch/402840... (History, focussed on Kasparov, Chiburdanidze and Korchnoi)

<Albo d' Oro Banja Luka:

# 1974 Vukic
# 1976 Hort
# 1979 Kasparov
# 1981 Tseshkovsky
# 1983 Hulak, Adorjan, Speelman
# 1985 Chiburdanidze
# 1987 Ekström, Hulak
# 2007 Korchnoi, Ilincic
# 2008 Heberla >

(if shared wins, the first on tie-break is mentioned first)

This major recurring, but in unregular intervals played international tournament is most famous for <Garry (Garik) Kasparov's> clear first as a non-titled player, aged 16 (and celebrating his birthday during that event!) in 1979.

Then <Maia Chiburdanidze's> win ahead of bunch of male grandmasters: she was surpassing eight male grandmasters and reminded within 13 rounds (round robin) unbeaten, winning among others against the two Brits Short and Plaskett.

And finally - it's never too late, <Viktor Korchnoi's> success, like Garry and Maia, he took Banja Luka at his very first participation (he already was invited in 1979 but could not particpate because of the soviet tournament boycott against him), 76 years young :)

For the sake of the legality of the things: Most notable participants, <not winning> this tournament, among others: Timman, Short, Sax, Nikolic, Smejkal, Ftacnik, Kuzmin, Bagirov, Inkiov, Browne, Lombardy, Tarjan, Farago, Csom, Matanovic, Matulovic, Parma, Kurajica, Cebalo, Velimirovic, Sznapik, Ruck, Stojanovic, Volkov, Gopal, and Ulf Andersson who has the longest Banja span, from 1976 (again 1979) to 2007

Would be nice to enjoy a tenth & jubilee event at Banja Luka!
