Chessgames.com Chess Event Description
Grand Chess Tour Paris Rapid (2016)

The first leg of the four-tournament 2016 Grand Chess Tour was held in Paris, France, from June 9 to June 12. The tournament consisted of a two-day rapid round-robin and a two-day blitz double-round-robin; in the combined standings, the results of the rapid games counted double (2 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, 0 points for a loss) while blitz games counted normally. In case of a tie for first place, a tie-break match would decide the winner.

The rapid games were played on June 9 (5 rounds) and June 10 (4 rounds); the time control was 25 minutes per player with a 10-second increment per move.

Blitz games and combined final results: Grand Chess Tour Paris Blitz (2016)

Next Grand Chess Tour (see http://grandchesstour.org/2016-pari... for standings) leg: YourNextMove Rapid (2016) (rapid stage at Leuven, Belgium).

Jun-11-16  fisayo123: I think Nakamura is one of the greatest blitz players ever due to his exploits on ICC, playchess and chess.com. He's a blitz and bullet legend. In the latter no one has yet to seriously compete with him and that bares credence to his incredible speed of thought. That's beyond dispute. I'm not the only one to believe this by the way. Seirawan believes he's the best blitz player ever. <The Rocket>

Also, who else here is out of form that could challenge Nakamura or Carlsen in blitz? Caruana had a horrible rapid event, but he was never going to do anything in blitz. MVL, yes, but he's 3rd right now and just played a very grueling 11 round tournament in France just a few days prior to this event. Nepomniachtchi isn't here. Grischuk isn't here. No Andreikin either. Everything is as expected.

Jun-11-16  1971: I think its fair, Naka is a clear notch above the rest of the field besides Carlsen in speed play.
Jun-11-16  The Rocket: <Seirawan believes he's the best blitz player ever. <The Rocket>>

Which is an insane statement, contrary to all the facts showing Carlsen to be a superior blitz player.

Nakamura lost a blitz match to Caruana, for god sake!

Jun-11-16  thegoodanarchist: <fisayo123: <My point is that Topa deserves to be here>

Yes, he deserves to be here with only 1 win in 17 rounds.>

I haven't seen the blitz results, but in rapid there were three other players with only 1 rapid win.

Do you think before you post or just write down whatever drivel comes out of your mouth?

Is there any other top player who plays bullet?

chancho: Seirawan can think what he likes, but the FIDE list says:

https://ratings.fide.com/top.phtml?...

Jun-11-16  1971: Seirawan took it too lfar. He's not even the best alive. Then you Fischer, Capa, Anand to name a few..
Jun-11-16  thegoodanarchist: <In the latter no one has yet to seriously compete with him and that bares credence to his incredible speed of thought.>

Ok, that answers my question - it's the second one.

Jun-11-16  Absentee: <thegoodanarchist: Or are you one of those people who thinks his opinions are correct and other people's opinions are wrong?>

No, that would be me.

(Insert smileys to denote humorous intent.)

Jun-11-16  The Rocket: If psychology is put aside, blitz (at least with increment) correlates heavily with overall chess prowess. It's the same game being played...
Jun-11-16  fisayo123: <Absentee>

http://chess.kivij.info/icc.shtml - ICC ratings (Naka doesn't play there anymore. Carlsen recently played a blitz tournament there as well)

https://www.chess.com/livechess/pla... - Chess.com ratings (Naka plays here now).

Nakamura's dominance of internet blitz is unparalleled. Maybe you can make a case of Carlsen being as good or better in blitz OTB, but very difficult to prove as "facts". Nakamura didn't even play any of the blitz world championships Carlsen won.

Jun-11-16  The Rocket: <Seirawan took it too lfar.>

Seirawan is delusional. It's national bias, that's all. He wouldn't ever say that about a foreign player with Nakamuras record in blitz.

Jun-11-16  The Rocket: Or rather <non-american player>, to be precise.

Tomorrow should be quite the barnburner, man.

Jun-11-16  Eyal: <Nakamura didn't even play any of the blitz world championships Carlsen won.>

Actually, he did. In 2014 he finished 3rd, a point behind Carlsen (http://chess-results.com/tnr138146....). And I think the only other World Blitz Championship Nakamura played was in 2010 - where Carlsen also participated; he finished 4th-5th, two points behind Carlsen (who was 3rd) and three points behind the winner, Aronian (http://en.chessbase.com/post/aronia...).

Jun-11-16  1971: <TheRocket: Seirawan is delusional. It's national bias, that's all. He wouldn't ever say that about a foreign player with Nakamuras record in blitz.>

Yeah when I heard that I was like what the f is this dude on, that was during that Blitz tourney with Kasparov (who could have easily won that). Seirawan is good but he tends to talk a lot of fluff in down time. There's no way Naka's better than Carlsen in anything. I thought that's been proven definitively a bunch of times already.

Jun-11-16  ndg2: Strange, Caru faired much better in Blitz today than yesterday in Rapids. Thought it would come the other way around.

keypusher: Is blitz done for the day? what are the standings?
Jun-11-16  john barleycorn: thanks <chancho> for posting the link with the standings incl. first day of blitz. some excitement to be expected tomorrow. however, the So-natics get silenced.
Jun-11-16  BOSTER: For me it's not clear how
<chancho> gets updated information first.
Jun-11-16  Absentee: He's connected with the chess cartels.
Jun-11-16  DeepTrouble: fisayo123:

<Maybe you can make a case of Carlsen being as good or better in blitz OTB, but very difficult to prove as "facts">

Carlsen is higher rated than Nakamura in OTB blitz (2931 vs 2896 live rating). He also defeated Nakamura 25.5-14.5 (or was it 26.5-13.5?) in their private 40 game blitz match a few years ago. So you could definitely make a case of Carlsen being slightly stronger in blitz, but in any case these guys play at a comparable level.

<Nakamura didn't even play any of the blitz world championships Carlsen won>

He did: In 2014 and 2010. Both times he scored less points than Carlsen (who also won the 2014 championships). It's also worth noting that Nakamura has never won a blitz world championship.

These results only go to show that OTB blitz and online blitz is not necessarily the same thing. Nakamura is a superb online blitz/bullet player, but he's not been able to demonstrate the same superiority in OTB blitz. Here players like Carlsen has performed better over the years.
