Aug-23-06  aw1988: http://www.chesstigers.de/bilder/ke...

At approximately 24.

Aug-23-06  positionalgenius: Hey,does anyone have pictures of a young Karpov?
Aug-24-06  Confuse: thanks <aw1988>! wow he looks so different. i wonder how i'd look like at 75... oh well.
Aug-24-06  KingG: In such a short format, anything can happen. Especially with such great players. I don't know why everyone is so critical of Korchnoi. It doesn't come close to Shirov's performance in a rapid event earlier this year where he scored 0.5/9! http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail.... I don't remember anyone saying age was catching up with Shirov.
Aug-24-06  dravid: Korchnoi is the oldest participant so maybe age is a factor and it's showing in his play. Plus, even if this event were to happen say 10 years ago, I would still give the favorite status to Kasparov and Karpov.
Aug-25-06  TylerD: Yes, it is a funny fact that 10, 15 or even 20 years ago, the result would have been the same... 20 years ago, though, I guess Polgar wouldn t be match of a match for the others, even Kortnjoj...
Aug-25-06  s4life: <aw1988: <Time has taken its toll on poor ole Viktor. At that age probably only one in five of his original brain cells is still alive and kicking. When I visit my dad in the home it seem like most the oldies have alzheimer's or senile dementia. Even Kasparov looks old now and he isn't even 45.> What an insult!>

I agree... no respect there.

Aug-27-06  sixfeetunder: Some studies say that playing chess is the best prophylaxis against dementia.
Aug-29-06  virginmind: diagonal: very good point.
Aug-29-06  spirit: sincerely me envy korchnoi,at this level of play he'll still manage to beat a 2600+ at age 80!...
Aug-29-06  hidude: who is who in the pictures?
Aug-29-06  cicero1974: <spirit: sincerely me envy korchnoi,at this level of play he'll still manage to beat a 2600+ at age 80!...> I think he is 'only' 75.

Sneaky: <who is who in the pictures? > Oh come on, you really don't know?

Korchnoi is bald. Kasparov has the blue shirt. Karpov is wearing the grey jacket. (And if you can't figure out which one Judit is then you really have problems!)

Aug-29-06  ganstaman: <sixfeetunder: Some studies say that playing chess is the best prophylaxis against dementia.> Do the studies show that playing chess actually causes a lower susceptibility to dementia, or simply a correlation between those that play chess and those that are less likely to get dementia? Without seeing the studies, i really don't know which way they go. That is, those that play chess a lot may be less susceptible to dementia due to some other factor (this factor also leads to them playing chess a lot). But forcing someone to play chess may not have any affect on whether or not they are affected by dementia.

As all statistics classes teach, relation does not imply causation. However, the studies could have been set up to show causation, so I don't know which way it is.

Sep-08-06  spirit: <cicero1974> 80 - 75 = 5 not 50

This Article in The Economist states 'keeping mentally agile protects against dementia' as an accepted fact, and describes a link in rats between mental stimulus and keeping brain cells alive: http://economist.com/science/displa...

Nov-15-06  vesivialvy93: ...is this possible that from now Karpov is as good as Kasparov are in blitz ? in New York Karpov won his short match vs Kasparov... maybe Kasparov is only a 2700 player today ? if someone would have told me 20 years ago that Karpov will play like that at 56-57 years of age and in blitz...lol this guy is clearly stronger than anybody at this age except for Kortchnoi of course ! how Karpov can be stronger in blitz in his 50's than he was at 30 ???
Nov-15-06  TIMER: Indeed Karpov should have been invited to the World Blitz Championship- he is still a top player in blitz (Polgar was in that championship too, for instance). Remember Tal won the World Blitz Championship when he was very ill in 1988 near the end of his life!( although he was only in his 50s)
Nov-15-06  percyblakeney: Karpov is still a strong blitz player, but a bit uneven as his recent losses against Humpy Koneru and Zhao Xue in Cap d'Agde shows. Here Korchnoi and maybe also Polgar missed winning moves against Karpov in their games with black, but in any case he of course did very well in this tournament...
Nov-15-06  TIMER: <percyblakeney> You are right, and I suppose blitz is very unpredictable anyway. Interesting how on that site the other day, Kasparov was by far the highest in blitz (over 2870) since 2000 while Anand was second with around 2790 (nearer to Karpov 10th with 2720). I would not have expected that. See : http://members.aon.at/sfischl/blitz...
Nov-15-06  vesivialvy93: <timer>Shirov is 4th but do you know if this is include his terrible last blitz tournament ? with 0,5 /6 ?
Nov-15-06  vesivialvy93: ...Shirov 0,5/9 !!! sorry ! my mistake , i could not remember how bad he did !
Dec-10-06  Ch3ckmate: how do i get to the final result page?
