May-02-14  PhilFeeley: <Whiteshark> Yup. And a new Italian family feud is born!
May-02-14  ChemMac: Last year Padova won, even though missing its two top players. "The team from Padova played without its stars Fabiano Caruana and Hikaru Nakamura, as they were playing in the FIDE Grand Prix." So Nakamura had been recruited for Padova already a year ago. No doubt Naka's Italian fianceé had something to do with this, plus the money of course. Padova has a "patron".
May-03-14  PhilFeeley: <No doubt Naka's Italian fianceé had something to do with this> Does anyone think Naka will change his allegiance to Italy, like Caruana?
May-03-14  hoodrobin: "Questo matrimonio non s'ha da fare."

May-03-14  Doniez: For the few of you not speaking Italian, the <hoodrobin> post is a quote from one of the most influential Italian novelist, Alessando Manzoni and his masterpiece "I promessi sposi" (the betrothed) and means "this wedding shall not be done". By the way, Naka's fiancé is a nice young lady who won twice the Italian chess championships and she is from Naples
May-03-14  Eti fan: Today is the Nakamura game, starts 15:00 CET here https://arena.chessdom.com/#/game/s...
May-03-14  mrbasso: Looks like the Italians try to boost Caruanas rating. White in every game while the foreigner MVL had to play all games with Black.

perfidious: <mrbasso: Looks like the Italians try to boost Caruanas rating. White in every game while the foreigner MVL had to play all games with Black.>

It's a conspiracy!!!! The unmentioned part of the story is that the Italians are trying to suppress the rating of that dirty furriner Vachier.

Bust-a-gut stuff.

May-03-14  mrbasso: Sure it is.

It's not about MVL's rating though. He is not a factor and can only qualify in tournaments. The first three qualify for the next candidates by rating and obviously it is a very close race.

May-03-14  parmetd: There is 0 chance Nakamura changes to italy because his invitations would disappear. The token American would again become Gata Kamsky. Not to mention the end of his relationship with St. Louis, the very very high country change fee and then ending up on bd2 for olympiads without a chance of medaling as a team.
May-03-14  Doniez: Maybe the fans of conspiracy are happy with the results of Fabiano, who went astray when he was dominating his game and drew. It is really boring and annoying to read posts like the above about this Italian conspiracy to support Caruana rating.
May-03-14  mrbasso: I'm not happy but it's certainly a rightful punishment. Of course Gajewskis weak opening was no match for Caruanas super strong opening and early middlegame play but fatigue set in and the winning line was actually not that obvious.
May-03-14  SirRuthless: Nakamura won with black vs an IM. Caruana drew today with white. Nice how he is getting the whites and stronger opponents but MVL and Naka are getting the blacks even though Nakamura has been at the club for a longer period of time. Some good ol' fashioned family business happening here.
May-03-14  Doniez: Naka was very tenacious and deserved his victory with black.

perfidious: <Doniez: Naka was very tenacious and deserved his victory with black.>

No player achieves what Nakamura has without such fortitude.

Long ago, I was playing on the board next to Nakamura vs J Friedel, 2000, a narrow escape against another young talent. It takes more guts to survive one of these rollercoaster rides than to pull off a smooth technical win.

May-04-14  Doniez: This morning (Italian time) Fabiano won his game with Black against GM Georgiev, rated 2550. Good performance til now.
May-04-14  Doniez: <perfidious> thank for the link, I didn't know that game, it was very instructive and is another proof of Naka tenacity. Story short, I agree with your post.

Yeah, the only reason he gets invitations is that he's American, nothing to do with him being top 10. And <token American>? He's lived in the U.S. since he was 2.

May-04-14  RedShield: Naka and pasta. Bad combination.

I don't think that at all.
In January Naka was world #3 at 2789
by april he had lost over 20 pts and dropped to #9. The players in the I.T.C. are not the strongest, so Naka may have had in mind trying to recover rating points to climb back up the ladder again.
