It's not about MVL's rating though. He is not a factor and can only qualify in tournaments.
The first three qualify for the next candidates by rating and obviously it is a very close race. |

weak opening was no match for Caruanas super strong opening and early middlegame play but fatigue set in and the winning line was actually not that obvious. |

Nice how he is getting the whites and stronger opponents but MVL and Naka are getting the blacks even though Nakamura has been at the club for a longer period of time. Long ago, I was playing on the board next to Nakamura vs J Friedel, 2000, a narrow escape against another young talent. It takes more guts to survive one of these rollercoaster rides than to pull off a smooth technical win. |

In January Naka was world #3 at 2789
by april he had lost over 20 pts and dropped to #9. The players in the I.T.C.
are not the strongest, so Naka may have had in mind trying to recover rating points to climb back up the ladder again. |
