Sep-11-08 | | kellmano: This is a high quality tourney packed with the elite of British chess. |

Sep-11-08 | | Simonkaser: second !!!!!!!

Sep-11-08 | | jon01: After three rounds Adams, Vachier-Lagrave, Fridman, Abergel, Bitalzadeh and Conquest have 3/3. |

Sep-11-08 | | SickedChess: Nigel Short lose with the Nokia Gambit in the second round http://www.liverpoolchessinternatio... |
Sep-12-08 | | atticuscc: ...packed with the elite of European chess (European Union member states). Elo average for 'top 14' is 2629 (equivalent of Category 15/16); average for top 25 is 2600. Arguably the strongest-ever tournament in Britain, if Elo rating is the sole guide. Certainly the strongest Open tournasment ever. See 21 games 'live' daily here:

Sep-12-08 | | WinstonSilcott: Is it compulsory to resign if your phone goes off?.What is the wording of the rule? |
Sep-12-08 | | zoren: You have to resign.
http://www.fide.com/component/handb... Article 12: The conduct of the players

The players shall take no action that will bring the game of chess into disrepute. 12.2
During play the players are forbidden to make use of any notes, sources of information, advice, or analyse on another chessboard.
It is strictly forbidden to bring mobile phones or other electronic means of communication, not authorised by the arbiter, into the playing venue. If a player`s mobile phone rings in the playing venue during play, that player shall lose the game. The score of the opponent shall be determined by the arbiter. |
Sep-13-08 | | PhilFeeley: Phone companies are stupid making a model that makes a noise when it's turned off. I hope Nigel sues them. |
Sep-14-08 | | PinkPanther: <PhilFreeley>
Nigel Short would get laughed out of the courtroom if he ever tried to do that. Furthermore, I sincerely doubt his phone was really off. As he said, the phone was new, so there is a chance he didn't know how to switch it completely off (or maybe when he thought he did, he really just put it into some different mode). |
Sep-15-08 | | PhilFeeley: Nigel is back to within 1 of the leaders and is in this position today: SK Williams (2496) vs. ND Short (2655)

Sep-15-08 | | jon01: Jan Werle - Daniel Fridman game was awesome. |
Sep-16-08 | | kellmano: <jon01> You're telling me: J Werle vs D Fridman, 2008
Absolutely brilliant stuff. |
Sep-16-08 | | Strongest Force: That is the type of game one has to play if one is going to beat Fridman. He is one of my favorite players. His style is super-solid and yet aggressive. Kind of like the way the late great L. Stein played. |
Sep-16-08 | | PhilFeeley: Short beat Conquest today to come within 1/2 a point of the lead. Werle, Adams and Laznick are still on top with 6.5. The last rounds should be interesting. |
Sep-16-08 | | Ezzy: Big game tomorrow - Adams v Short. The best of British! |
Sep-17-08 | | kellmano: <Ezzy> Disappointment of disappointment, a 12 move draw. Even that after a repetition. A very strange decision given the tournament situation for both players. |
Sep-17-08 | | kellmano: Perhaps slightly less strange for Nigel with black against the rating favourite. |
Sep-17-08 | | PinkPanther: Oh yeah, what was I saying about Adams a few weeks ago? Something about his balls not having dropped. |
Sep-17-08 | | jon01: Werle beat Laznicka with black pieces. It was a nice and quick game. Werle is a leader now with 7.5/9 and it includes only one draw! |
Sep-17-08 | | aragorn69: <The effort of winning was too much for 57-year-old Ulf, who has chosen to take a zero-point bye in round nine>, says the round 8 report at the offical site. I didn't even know this was allowed... Has anybody ever heard of a precedent?? |
Sep-17-08 | | PinkPanther: It might be a fancy way of saying he chose to forfeit his round 9 game. |
Sep-18-08 | | zluria: Adams draws again! Or should I say Adrawms? Seriously, what is this? In an open tournament like this, playing a player rated 143 rating points below him, shouldn't Adams at least try to win? What's the matter with him? he drew in 13 moves, still well within theory. Did he come to play chess and try to win the tournament, or mess around? Disappointment... |
Sep-18-08 | | xky: Adams is probably the most recent 2700+ player to lose against the Petroff with white. |
Sep-18-08 | | malthrope: <zluria: Adams draws again! Or should I say Adrawms? [...] Disappointment...> Definitely unexpected! ~lol~ Here I thought, 'OK - Mickey is gonna repeat a few moves and then play Chess!' *NoT* At least Bacrot finally showed up and Short will certainly try to win. Meanwhile, Werle and Vachier-Lagrave found a way to get out of book! ;) |
Sep-18-08 | | Harvestman: Adams gets a full point in just 25 moves! Unfortunately for the spectators, those 25 moves took him two entire games. I've no objection to a draw, but that's a bit much for the highest rated player in the tournament, who you would expect to be trying to win the thing. Especially when he had white for 12 of those moves. Mind you, long tournament. Maybe he's tired. |
