Aug-11-12  jon01: <notyetagm: Who the hell is this non-titled guy?? World Junior Championship (2012)/Mark Lapidus> He is 2012 Estonian champion.
Aug-11-12  belgradegambit: Holt defeated Lapidus and now has 7 points!
Aug-11-12  parmetd: Is this 11 rounds?
Aug-11-12  belgradegambit: Holt has white against Ipatov tomorrow (should be a Slav) while Rapport has black against Shimanov. Sort of surprising that 2 time adult Chinese champion Ding Liren is a full point behind.
Aug-12-12  twinlark: <parmetd> It's 13 rounds.
Aug-12-12  MarkFinan: I have odds of 75-1 with the chessbookie for Rapport to win this tournament, and for some reason I thought this would be 10 rounds! Anyone know his remaining opponents?

perfidious: <MarkFinan> Beyond today's round (as posted above), no telling yet.
Aug-12-12  MarkFinan: OK perf, cheers :)
Aug-12-12  BUNA: Rapport keeps the lead with 8.5/10. He just completely annihilated Shimanov in 26 moves. With black. Impressive.
Aug-12-12  Shams: <BUNA> That game is almost terrifying.
Aug-12-12  Atking: Still 3 games.... Everything could happen. A hard fight championship as usual but GM Rapport seems favorite. He played with confidence yesterday.
Aug-12-12  parmetd: 3 games left or 1? Is it 13 or 11 rounds?
Aug-12-12  fisayo123: Rapport, the two chinese guys and the chinese kid Wei Yi are the most promising players here.

I fully expect Rapport to win after 13 rounds though he needs to learn to stop playing too quickly in his opponents time trouble. Its never a good idea.

OBIT: The Swiss System parings will ensure that Rapport does not have it easy the last three rounds. Of the five players with 8 or 8.5, he has played only Yu and Ipatov, scoring 0.5-1.5 against them. Rapport gets Grandelius next round, and he may get both Liren and Ter-Sahakyan in the last two. This will not be a walk in the park for him.

Ipatov is in an interesting position. He is only a half point back, and he has played every opponent within a half-point of him. In theory, he should get somewhat weaker opponents the last three rounds, while the other players with a shot to win the tournament will be taking points from each other in head-to-head match-ups.

Aug-13-12  twinlark: <parmetd> World Junior Championship (2012)
Aug-14-12  nullkelvin: <kurtrichards> USCF invites highest rated player on February rating list in addition to Junior Closed winner. Holt was second in line after Robson who presumably declined.
Aug-14-12  waustad: Rapport could be hurt by the early loss if it goes to tiebreaks. That is the downside of a "Swiss gambit". The tiebreak here seems to be the sum of the opponent's ratings, which is lower so far than most of those within striking range. Another one in a similar situation here is Grandelius.

OBIT: In round 12, Ding Liren picks up a half point on the field by beating Shimanov while the other six players at or above him drew with each other. So, going into the final round, the top scores are:

9.5: Rapport, Ipatov
9.0: Ding Liren, Ter-Sahakyan

Ipatov has already played all three, so he will be paired down. Rapport will play Ding or Ter-Sahakyan. Ipatov is in the driver's seat - not good news for Ding.

Aug-14-12  parmetd: Rapport will play Ding cause he JUST drew with Ter-Shahakayan
Aug-14-12  Pirandus: Hello:
Ipatov is a turkish player with a russian name? He is a Russian living in Turkey?

OBIT: Heh, Ipatov has also played the three players with 8.5, so he will be paired with someone with 8. Motivation will be on his side - he'll have a lot more to gain from a victory than his opponent.
Aug-15-12  twinlark: Ipatov is a Ukrainian who moved to Spain before settling in Turkey.

Ipatov-Shimanov
Zherebukh-Ter-Sahakian
