Jul-24-09  unsound: Interesting knight ending in Negi-Postny. Although now it seems to have become a drawn queen ending.
Jul-24-09  nothingness99: Can Negi pull out a win here?
Jul-24-09  aragorn69: Interesting round. On the top eleven boards, only 3 draws and 1 White win, but 7 (<seven>) Black wins (admittedly always with rating superiority).
Jul-24-09  waustad: As <aragorn> mentioned, the higher rated player won all of the decisive games this round. In a big Swiss where in the first round a 2700+ player is playing a 2010 the first round will have a lot of decisive games. Even this far into the tournament large rating differences seem to be common, though not as extreme as earlier. The draws often seem to be the upsets.
Jul-24-09  Ragh: <at any rate, by considering the development of players like carlsen, karjakin, kasparov, kramnik, anand, etc., it seems like the most important period to gauge future potential might not be the period leading up to receiving the gm title, but rater the development between 15-16 and 20. in that respect i think it's much more important how negi progresses now than when he got the gm title. good luck to him! :o)> <frogbert> Agreed. At least, as of now, it looks like negi is on the right course in this tournament.
Jul-25-09  zluria: I've been following this tournament for the last 3 rounds. Here's an interesting fact: The Postny game is always the last to finish. He's a fighter!

In Yesterday's game, for example, I was sure that he was totally lost against Negi, but he managed to save it somehow... The day before that it was a totally drawn Bishop endgame against Sargissian, which he played on for another 50 moves before sacrificing his Bishop for another drawn endgame.

Jul-25-09  waustad: An upset, Sethuraman beat Dreev.
Jul-25-09  waustad: Two very young Indians at the top here.
Jul-25-09  waustad: JL Hammer appears to have lost on time.
Jul-25-09  vonKrolock: In Avrukh vs Hammer there was not a satisfactory defense against the threats of ♗xc5 and ♖ or ♕ e8+
Jul-25-09  vonKrolock: in summa - he lost on time, but he was also already <hammered>
Jul-25-09  wanabe2000: Currently in place number 31. Started in place 97. Name Kassa Korley (Marshall Chess Club) rating 2143 with 6/9 points. (!) It seems he/she is the only USA person playing in this tournament. Anyone know about this individual?

Glad to see an African-American player doing very well in an international chess tournament.

Jul-25-09  SimonWebbsTiger: Call us parochial, but us Danes like to emphasise the Danish part of his (Kassa's) heritage. Obvious, though, since we're in Copenhagen!
Jul-25-09  virginmind: wow, bent larsen is playing competitive chess since 70 years! well, maybe i should rather say 'playing in chess competitions'...nevertheless, the guy is something!
Jul-25-09  soldal: And he's playing two games each round!
Jul-25-09  waustad: I just looked through the list at the official site and there are 7 different people named Larsen playing, but none of them is named Bent. Patronyms do that. One of my grandparents was named an alternate spelling of Larsen.
Jul-25-09  notyetagm: <SimonWebbsTiger: Call us parochial, but us Danes like to emphasise the Danish part of his (Kassa's) heritage. Obvious, though, since we're in Copenhagen!>

I understand that.

But in most of the world, if you are white and black, you are black..

Jul-26-09  virginmind: <waustad> i see, well, for some reason <cg.com> thought he is bent. or maybe he is a totally special guest being allowed to play two games in a round, but not officialy in the tournament?...
Jul-26-09  SetNoEscapeOn: <<wanabe2000: Currently in place number 31. Started in place 97. Name Kassa Korley (Marshall Chess Club) rating 2143 with 6/9 points. (!) It seems he/she is the only USA person playing in this tournament. Anyone know about this individual?>>

Kasa Korley! Several years ago, perhaps as many as 7 or 8, ESPN did a special on Maurice Ashley and what it is like to be a chess player. Towards the end of it, Maurice plays blitz with a young kid with dreadlocks. He lauds Kasa's abilities and predicts that he will be a future "champion" (although of course Maurice showed no mercy in the actual games). So it is absolutely great to see the young man making master at 15. If he so chooses, he still has many years to improve his chess and aim for higher titles.

Jul-26-09  Don Cossacks: GM Malakhov(who lead the tournament until the penultimate round)unfortunately lose to GM Boris Avrukh(Israel)in the final round that made GM Parimarjan Negi of India the winner.Sigh...I'm counting on GM Malakhov to win this one.

Troller: A pity for Malakhov, he looked a solid winner of the tournament until last round. But that's a Swiss tournament for you, and Malakhov has won it before.

Impressive display by Negi on the other hand. Maybe he is ready for another jump on the elo list - expectations are certainly there.

Hillarp-Persson only scored ½/3 in the last three rounds to finish way down the table, but he got the brilliancy prize for this: T Hillarp Persson vs Dreev, 2009

Jul-27-09  gus inn: Once again the nerves of Malakhov played a decissive role in the last round. What a shame for this worldclass player..

I really feel sorry for him.

Better "luck" next time.
