Nov-19-21 | | ndg2: The draw master of this tournament is Grischuk. I somehow doubt he will suddenly get into fervent attack mode against Firouzja in round 8. |
Nov-20-21 | | fabelhaft: Looking at Radjabov’s latest decisive game, in 2019, it’s a bit funny to note how surprised he sounded that also that game wasn’t drawn. Radjabov needed a win in that game but afterwards said he was shocked that Ding Liren didn’t know that the line was a forced draw :-) Today Azerbaijan are resting Mamedyarov, so Radjabov plays first board, against Korobov. I wouldn’t bet against a draw… |
Nov-20-21 | | fabelhaft: The game of the day is of course Grischuk vs Firouzja. Probably the last time the two face each other with Grischuk as the highest rated of the two on the current rating list. |
Nov-20-21 | | ndg2: If Firouzja draws today, his live rating actually shouldn't decrease, as the official FIDE rating of Grischuk is 2773 right now and Alireza's is 2770. Is my calculation correct or do they take live ratings into account? However, since Russia lost yesterday against Ukraine, maybe the Russians will wake up and we see an aggressive Grischuk today? Anyway, let's hope the French team doesn't do so well today so he gets again an "easy" 2600-ish GM tomorrow ;-) |
Nov-20-21 | | fabelhaft: Russia lost their second match in a row, not often that happens in the European Team Championship. In all events played since 1957 a Soviet or Russian team only did it once before (2005). And they do have a rather strong team, their players are #2, #9, #10, #11 and #14 of the event. Leading Armenia have #26, #50, #52, #58 and #68. |

Nov-20-21 | | ndg2: Alireza playing with white against Shak in the last round. Could be exciting! Yes, France is co-leader with 12 points now after their win against Russia. Armenia in the lead with the best tie-break, they will play against Ukraine. |

Nov-21-21 | | nok: Tense final between Azeris and France
. |
Nov-21-21 | | thebully99: The future belongs to Firouzja, it's just a matter of when he'll take it. Only the worst possible luck will prevent him from becoming world champion in this decade. And of course while Firouzja went on a dominating streak, Timid Teimour drew all of his games...... |
Nov-21-21 | | ndg2: Mamedyarov blundered in a rook endgame. Alireza now with 2803 ELO and #2 spot in FIDE next month. He also played a tremendous tournament of course with 8 out 9 points. |
Nov-21-21 | | Chess for life: What are the tiebreaks? |
Nov-21-21 | | nok: France could win the whole thing thanks to Ali. Supercomputers sorting out the TBs rn |
Nov-21-21 | | Chess for life: Looking at https://chess-results.com/tnr583987... Looks like France wins because the first tie-break is 164.5 vs 154.0, looks like some kind of sum of board points. |
Nov-21-21 | | Chess for life: That's the tie-break going into the final round, i.e., before today's results. |
Nov-21-21 | | Chess for life: This has the details: https://www.euroteamchess2021.eu/wp... First tie-break is: "By the sum of Sonneborn–Berger points, which is calculated as follows: match points of each
match, excluding the opponent who scored the lowest number of match points, multiplied by the number of board points scored against each opponent respectively. The highest number wins; in case of two or more opponents with the same total of match points the
lowest results of multiplication shall be excluded" |
Nov-21-21 | | macer75: <fabelhaft: It’s amazing how Radjabov manages to line up game after game where it never seems anything else than certain draw on every move. But it works for Azerbaijan, first place with two matches left.> If Radjabov had been paired against Firouzja and Mamedyarov against MVL, Azerbaijan might have tied France and won the tournament. |
Nov-21-21 | | macer75: <thebully99: The future belongs to Firouzja, it's just a matter of when he'll take it. Only the worst possible luck will prevent him from becoming world champion in this decade.> That, or Carlsen continuing to play like Carlsen. |
Nov-21-21 | | fabelhaft: Ukraine won some strong team events in the past, but never the European Team Championship, and they did have players like Ivanchuk, Ponomariov and Karjakin. Now they won it with Korobov as the strongest player, and he is 2684. |
Nov-21-21 | | fabelhaft: Strong finish by France, beating the top ranked teams Russia and Azerbaijan, and it was almost enough for first place. Still four of the five French players underperformed and lost rating points. The fifth did fairly well though. |

Nov-22-21 | | shakh.i.shekh: Following up on a previous comment, Ukraine won 2 GOLD medals at Chess Olympiads in 2004 and 2010. Unfortunately, Ukraine no longer has any players that are invited to top tier tournaments. It has no 2700 rated player. Perhaps Kirill Shevchenko now 19 can rise to chess elite. He has the right last name to represent Ukraine. |

Nov-22-21 | | fabelhaft: <Speaking of Karjakin, why didn't he play?> Probably busy preparing with Nepo. |
Nov-22-21 | | metatron2: That's why Tari and Hammer didn't play for Norway? |
