The 26th European Club Cup was a 7-round Swiss team tournament held at the Novotel Hotel (Grand Hotel) in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, 17-23 October 2010, with the participation of 49 clubs from 30 countries, including defending champions Ekonomist SGSEU-1 of Russia, which mustered Eljanov, Tomashevsky, Alekseev, Andreikin, Moiseenko, Ni Hua and Roiz. Of the 344 players, 134 were GMs. Each match was played over six boards, with 2 points for a team win and 1 point for a draw. Time control: 90 minutes for 40 moves, then 30 more minutes till the end of the game, with a 30-second increment from move one. First prize: 10,000 euros. Tournament director: Nikolay Velchev. Chief arbiter: Dirk de Ridder. Ekonomist SGSEU-1 won again with 13/14, ahead of Russian Yugra (Jakovenko. Karjakin-Radhabov drawn in 14 moves. Unfortunately, Radjabov has been a big disappointment in the last few years, taking so many early, unfought draws. Especially here, where his team needs to win with a big score in order to have a chance for gold. |

The Saratov team tied Yugra 3-3 in a match that was closely contested despite the deceiving looks of all six draws. Top-seeded SOCAR Azerbaijan and ShSM-64 Moscow also played 3-3, with Mamedyarov beating Gelfand on the first board and Riazantsev equalizing by defeating Shirov.
German champion Baden-Baden OSG and A DAN DZO & PGMB Chernigiv caught up with the other teams on the shared second place by winning their final matches. Economist-SGSEU-1 is convincingly first with 13 match points, full two points ahead of the rest of the field. But further bellow was a cluster of four teams who shared the second place by collecting 11 points each. Yugra and A DAN DZO & PGMB Chernigiv had the best sum of individual scores and entered into medal distribution. <Economist wins European Club Cup in Plovdiv
24.10.2010 – The Russian team won the 2010 title with 13 match points, ahead of four teams with eleven apiece. But the most outstanding performance came from Armenian GM Levon Aronian, playing for Mika Yerevan, who scored 4.5/6 with a 2884 performance that brings him to 2801 (and at least number three in the world) on the next FIDE rating list. Aronian is only the sixth player to cross the 2800 mark.> <The best performance (of any player with six or more games) was scored by Levon Aronian, playing for Mika Yerevan, who chalked up three wins and three draws for a 2884 rating performance.
