May-23-09 | | Ezzy: <When was the last time that Shirov won a major tournament?> He's never won a Linares or Wijk-an-Zee or any big recognised supertournament. His 2nd (to Anand) in Linares 1998 ahead of Kasparov, Kramnik, Svidler, Ivanchuk and Topalov, was a fantastic performance though. Probably his best ever tournament result before this one. He deserves this big win. Makes up for some of the unfortunate incidents of the past. His match win against Kramnik was a massive highlight. Shirov is a highlight full stop. A real chess great. Especially with the chess fans! |

 | | WannaBe: Poor Chucky, ended up being the punching bag in this tournament... =( |
May-23-09 | | ksr: <niemzo: <ksr> That's true, but Shirov could hardly draw a game against him.> I was actually responding to the previous poster. In a tournament (while figuring out the possible winner )Kasparov and Shirov's head to head does not matter. Other players like Anand , Ivanchuk would probably get a few more draws against Kasparov , but with Kasparov playing in a tournament , others players became equally disadvantaged (
in more or less the same degree). So saying that had Kasparov played in Mtel
2009 ( and at his best form) , Shirov would not win is half truth, the real truth is neither would the other players win. So if you sigle out Shirov as being disadvantaged in a tournament featuring Kasparov is not technically correct, all the others were. |

May-23-09 | | Rolfo: A win in last round, he is still within top 30 above 2700 :) |
May-23-09 | | messachess: Congratulations to Alexey on M-Tel first place. Maybe it's his time for a resurgence. Ivanchuk reached a high of 2787. Let's see what Shirov can do. |
May-23-09 | | DeltaHawk: carlsen denied first place... again! :( |
May-23-09 | | WhiteRook48: Ivanchuk
Victories: 1
:) |
May-23-09 | | veigaman: Shirov won playing good chess with whites and blacks and also playing with consistency along the tournament. It is good to have a high class player among the best and now he has to confirm it to avoid being considered a "fluke" |
May-23-09 | | smaragdus: Congratulations to Shirov for his well-deserved win of Mtel Masters 2009. It seems he played flawless chess, not a single major mistake or dubious move in ten games is not less impressive than his overall triumph. He is a great player and i hope that his success in Sofia is just the beginning of his real come-back. Here i present a picture of the happy and relaxed winner soon after his decisive game with Carlsen-
http://picasaweb.google.com/smaragd...
It happened that I overheard the end of an interview he was giving for some Russian media, I missed the question, but his response was something like that, i quote by memory- "I do not wish anybody anything bad, but I won't forget what Kramnik did to me when he managed to arrange a match with Kasparov for the title, which gave an entirely different turn to my whole career...". He was kind enough to give me an autograph (in fact now I have autographs by all the participants at Mtel Masters and by Antoaneta Stefanova to boot, who turned out to be an extremely spontaneous, communicative and easy-going person with girlish aura, it was hard to imagine that I was talking with a former world champion) and when I mentioned that I hoped that one day Riga would have another world champion, he smiled broadly. Yes, I really do think that he was robbed by both Kramnik and Kasparov after he had fairly and deservedly won the right to play for the title, and that he is worthy to have a chance to become a world champion. Let fire keep burning! |
May-23-09 | | veigaman: <smaragdus> the past is only usefull to get experience, shirov should focus on the future. The debate kramnik- shirov is past, kramnik got his shot and he took advantage of that. Shirov seems to be back and that´s good for chess. |
May-23-09 | | returnoftheking: nice photo and info smaragdus! |
May-24-09 | | jurado96: I said it early
whoever gets more points from Ivanchuk
will win this one |
May-24-09 | | Red October: shirov in the lead? wow I better get back to my part of the universe soon |
May-24-09 | | Andrijadj: SHAME on Chessbase for their coverage.Amount of negligence showed there is simply disgusting. |
May-24-09
 | | Richard Taylor: Ivanchuk is out of form Shirov is in form - Shirov people forget was and is still is one of the best players in the world. Also he is an expert on the Svesnikov! (spelling for this?) Carlsen is young he will play many more great games. |
May-24-09 | | Comandente: Why is Chessbase so disgusted towards M-Tel? Is it only because of Danailov? Quite kildish, if so... |
May-24-09 | | Andrijadj: Very childish,and very stupid too.
Especially considering that they covered last Mtel and Bilbao properly. |
May-24-09 | | euripides: Did Chessbase decide not to cover Mtel, or did Mtel indicate Chessbase weren't welcome ? |
May-24-09 | | Andrijadj: Well, chessbase covered last Mtel, and Bilbao too,and lauded Topalov's performance in Bilbao, and they covered Topalov-Kamsky too. So I guess it was chessbase's decision, since Bulgarians have no reason to hold grudge against them. |
May-24-09
 | | moronovich: There was (at least) one episode were the bulgarians didn´t allow playchess to bring the moves from Topalov-Kamsky. |
May-24-09 | | Andrijadj: Really???I did not know, since I followed match on chessok. But there were always articles about match on chessbase, with thoroughly annotated games... |
May-24-09 | | virginmind: yeah, ive noticed that too, in all their reports from mtel they gave no pictures and not even mentioning the official site link at the end (which they have been doing for all big tournaments). maybe its a reaction to that mention which kept appearing on the mtel official site, prohibiting any other live broadcast of the moves as copyright infringement - like, ok, we will not copy anything from you, wont take any pictures and wont even mention your site. just a hunch... |
May-24-09 | | timhortons: I did not expect GM Shirov to take the crown.
As for Magnus, winning a tourney is still elusive but the experience he's gaining playing against this heavyweights will make him a World Champ soon. |
May-24-09 | | hedgeh0g: I can hardly bring myself to say it, but I fear Chucky has merged with van Wely to form Luck van Chucky! :( |
May-24-09 | | kc1968: Van Wely the punching bag is playing in Chicago Open now |
