Aug-02-05  Phoenix: I just received my copy of Chess Life and glanced through it, and there are no pictures of anyone except GMs and a small one of the married couple. No pictures of the huge tournament hall, no pictures of the convention center, and no pictures of the little guys, the non-masters who made it happen! I thought the tournament was about spreading chess to everyone? My family and I were standing next to an official photographer at the closing ceremony, and he said he took at least 2000 pictures of the entire event. I remember seeing him in all sections, clicking away. He also said that after he had a chance to go over all the photos, they'd be on the official site. Now, guess what? If you go the official site, months after the tournament has ended, there have been no updates! They haven't even updated the winners section. It's like once the tournament was completed, everyone forgot about it. What's going on here?

But there's no excusing the article in Chess Life. Someone messed up bad, and I'm a little surprised to find myself the only one who feels strongly enough about it to say something.

Mar-26-06  southpawjinx: HB Global Chess Challenge
Minneapolis, May 2005
Four Clark County Chess Club members participated in they HB Global Chess Challenge in Minneapolis, Minnesota, which has reportedly become the largest chess event ever in the US and maybe even the world!

Of the four members, two of them won decent cash prizes for their efforts with Chad Gauvin scoring 7½/9, finishing tied for 2nd in the Under 2000 section (winning $4,700) and Rockford Watson winning a class prize in the Under 1400 section ($1,000) after finishing with 3½/9.

The other two members were Walter Churchill (Under 1800) who finished with 2/9 and Alex Rubio (Under 1400) who finished with 4/9.

The whole event attracted over 1500 players, and the strong Open had 57 Grandmasters participating, which was won by GM Zviad Izoria from Georgia on 7½/9. He walked away with $50,000 and a Polanti watch valued at $7,000!

Rockford Watson has being kind enough to provide the following report on his venture to Minneapolis.

The experience at the HB Global Chess Challenge was just perfect. The first three games I lost, but I came to Minneapolis with a plan, which was to take pictures of the tournament and to go and see Star Wars. After the movie I would focus harder on the rest of the chess playing. Things just got better and better as time went along, especially rounds 8 and 9 that I won. I met and got some pictures with some of the masters in attendance. I would seriously play again in this tournament if they hold it next year.

Here are my last two round games that secured me 5th place in the Under 1000 group and $1,000!

Finished with 6/9 points in the unrated, but lost a ton of points on my provisional rating (which was 1672 before the tourney). Mostly because I had a loss to someone rated well below 1000 in round 1. Are you going to vegas in june?

One large tournament that I DEFINITELY will make is The MidAmerican Open in Des Moines, probably in the U1400 section. Anyone else going to be there or was there last year?

Mar-28-06  southpawjinx: No they are not running this tournament because the HB Foundation lost $500,000 in running this tournament and became officially broke in November 2005.

Nov-07-06  James Bowman: <southpawjinx> I am not sure but I think I played you in that tournament or at least we spoke at some time because I distinctly remember your face as you reminded me of a friend of mine, I also played a guy who I used to play online and beat, but unfortunatly for me he was taking lessons with an IM and did better against me in the tournement ;o]

After the tournament I got lessons from GM Sam Palantik @ his place, and got an autographed book. Then i went to play in the National Open Blitz Championship, and came in 1st U1200.

My next tournament quite possibly will be the National Open in 07. Good Luck to you and may our paths cross again Over The Board.

Nov-20-06  James Bowman: <sothpawjinx> I spent many months training for just such a thing, hoping to find an opponent who would count peices off the board and ignore the board itself, and alas to my surprise you fell straight into it. Roman Dzindzshshvili video number 4, of course I combined that with Obi Wan Kenobi's method. Sorry you miscounted we can play online some time and it will be harder for me to cheat that way, but I do want full rigths to the bathroom without camera's if your manager agrees.

Just kiding in all this I didn't or woud not hide a piece, and if you have it post our game here so they could see some of us patzers playing, I do hope we play again I do play online at ICC under my own name as you might guess. Also congratulations on the 1st place finish training with a GM must have helped a lot.
