"The Swiss-system tournament had 32 invited(!) competitors. When sending out the invitations, they tried to ensure that all categories were represented, so 9 GMs, 10 IMs, 10 FMs and 3 National Masters started. The best of Dutch chess played, and their young talents had a good opportunity to learn and win titles. I started well, with 3 points out of 3. Later, if I add my important victory in the fifth round (against Timman), I was in a brilliant position, because Timman was naturally a major rival. However, in the middle of the tournament I was struggling with a cold, so I had to slow down. Then, after three draws, I faced Seirawan, whom I managed to outplay in the middle game and defeat (with Black). After that, I wanted to secure my first place, and, overextending myself, I lost to the Dutchman Van der Sterren. Therefore, in the last round, I absolutely had to win with black against GM Ree, Korchnoi's second. I succeeded! ... The Englishman Chandler's preparation and meaningful play was surprising. Here he finally managed to meet the GM norm for the second time. In recent years he has missed this by only half a point several times. We witnessed another GM norm fulfillment: the very talented, young Englishman Short also managed to do it." (Sax in Sakkélet, modified transl.)  | | John Saunders: According to Informator 36 (page 342) it was L Lengyel (i.e. GM Levente Lengyel, 1933-2014) and not B Lengyel (1949-2017, untitled Bela Lengyel) who took part in this tournament. However, a contemporary Dutch Newspaper, Stichting Algemeen Dagblad, gave the 1st round draw on 15 July 1983 confirms that it was indeed Bela (and not Levente) Lengyel, who took part, so Informator looks to be wrong. |
