Gibraltar Masters (2004) The 2nd Gibraltar Masters was a 91-player 10-round Swiss tournament held in the Caleta Hotel, La Caleta, Gibraltar, from 27 January to 5 February 2004, as part of the Gibtelecom Gibraltar Chess Festival. Time control: 100 minutes for the whole game, with 60 seconds added per move from move 1. First to fifth prizes: GBP 4000, 2500, 1500, 1000, 600. The festival also featured two amateur tournaments (Tercentenary Amateurs and BCF Centenary Amateurs). Chief organizer: Stewart Reuben. Chief arbiter: David Welch? Rounds started at 3 pm. I appreciate his style of play, although his tendency to overlook good opportunites for himself in positions has risen since his WC challenger days. He still plays a very extremely tricky and fighting game to the end. I've seen him swindle a win with a Rook and 2 pawn vs. Bishop, Knight and 4 pawn ending on playchess.com in 3+2 minute blitz! He may be an equally strong annotator/writer. He is a straight-shooter with a strong vocabulary and diction skills. I greatly enjoy his columns. R+2P against NB+4P is a win for the player with the Knight, Bishop, and 4 pawns. So if he did indeed lose with the Rook and 2 pawns, then it was probably only because he was supposed to.
