Chessgames.com Chess Event Description
Hastings 1973/74

The 49th Hastings Christmas Chess Festival was held at the end of the year 1973. Sixteen grandmasters and masters were invited to compete in a round robin format at the premier event. The notable participants of this edition included former world champion Mikhail Tal, former Hastings winners Svetozar Gligoric and Laszlo Szabo, Soviet Grandmaster Gennadi Kuzmin, and a 22 year old Dutch master, named Jan Timman, seeking his second grandmaster norm. In the two years since the playing field had increased for the tournament's format a larger display of talent and styles was being exhibited at Hastings, and this year was no exception. In addition to the aggressive and tactical displays of Tal and Timman, there were also more offbeat playing styles represented in the guise of British masters Michael Basman and Anthony Miles, and Canadian grandmaster Duncan Suttles. The final of the event saw a four way tie for first place among Kuzmin, Szabo, Tal, and Timman, who earned his second GM norm. Five-time Hastings winner Gligoric trailed the leaders by half a point for clear fifth place.

Jul-07-13  ozmikey: I notice that Laszlo Szabo drew seven of his games in 15 moves or fewer on the way to winning this tournament. At least some things in the chess world have changed for the better.
Jan-19-15  asianwarrior: Adorjan 9 draws below 20 moves.

perfidious: Shortly afterwards, a piece appeared in Chess Life & Review in which the author averred that Adorjan's well-known tendencies in that direction were the reason why he had made less progress than had either Gyula Sax or Zoltan Ribli.
Nov-21-17  Octavia: Basman drew with Tal!!!

Fusilli: Miles started with +0 =2 -5... unrecognizable!
Dec-26-17  Nosnibor: <Fusilli> You should remember that Miles was only 19 years old whilst playing in this tournament being far younger than most of the other contestants. I remember watching him play in this event and losing his first game to Rellstab after a long struggle. Only two years before this I came close to beating him when he was lucky to escape with a draw. So he had progressed tremendously in those two years.
Dec-26-17  WorstPlayerEver: Timman was just 22.

Fusilli: And Szabo was 56. Impressive performance for his age.
Nov-30-19  cunctatorg: @ <Fusilli>: I fully agree with you; a really glorious day for strong GM (and Candidates' participant) Laszlo Szabo!!
