SwitchingQuylthulg: As far as I can tell, what's happening is this: http://schachlive.dresden2008.de/li...

If Peng wins, Ukraine takes the gold. If Kosintseva holds a draw, Georgia takes the gold!

Nov-25-08  percyblakeney: Very tough on Poland to play so well with their comparatively low rated team and miss the medal with a small margin. They made the mistake to win their first matches and finished with eight top ten ranked opponents in a row. If Zawadzka just had taken that repetition draw iinstead of trying to win the game and the gold...
Nov-25-08  Alphastar: <SwitchingQuylthulg> I assume this is because of sonneborn-berger and similar kind of points?
Nov-25-08  percyblakeney: It's clearer with the individual gold, Chiburdanidze scored +6 -0 =3 and performed way over 2700.

SwitchingQuylthulg: <Alphastar> Yes. According to my calculations (which could be wrong), if Netherlands get a draw out of this, then Ukraine gets a Sonneborn-Berger of 410 versus 409.5 for Georgia (0.5 point difference!) but if Russia wins 2.5-1.5, then Georgia wins the tie-break fight 411.5 to 406.5.

SwitchingQuylthulg: (By the way, if my calculations <are> wrong, then Georgia will win anyway.)

SwitchingQuylthulg: Well, it doesn't matter if my calculations were right or wrong: the game was drawn, Georgia takes the gold, and I pocket 5500 chessbucks for predicting that ;-)

SwitchingQuylthulg: My calculations were right and have been confirmed:

<1 4 GEO Georgia GEO 11 8 2 1 18 411,5

2 2 UKR Ukraine UKR 11 7 4 0 18 406,5>

Ukrainian women were the only team (open or female) to survive without a single loss, but that wasn't enough.

Nov-25-08  virginmind: congratulations georgia. heh, the romanians drew their match with the golden medalists...
Nov-25-08  karoaper: Congratulations to Georgia, Ukraine, and US. So US wins both bronzes. Great result. Also, Maia Chiburdanidze needs to be awarded a Georgian medal of heroism
Nov-25-08  virginmind: congratulations to motoc alina who took 3rd place at board 5 (with 8 points out of 11) and to paulet iozefina who is placed fourth at board 4 (with 6.5 out of 9)!

romania final ranked 11th (initially seeded 16th) - not bad result all things considered.

Nov-25-08  percyblakeney: Poland would have given over 900 times the money if they had kept the lead they had before the final round. Impressive result by especially Joanna Majdan. She faced opponents ranked well above her in the last six games, and scored 5.5/6. She played in all the 11 rounds, won 9 games, and gained close to 70 points.
Nov-25-08  Astardis: I'm quite happy for Maia. Finishing this Olympiad with a rating performance of 2715 is quite a statement. Congratulations!
Nov-25-08  Bratek: <Percyblakeney>Indeed .Very impressive.Joanna Majdan won a gold medal on fourth board with Rp 2621.Its second best Rating perfornance after Cziburdanidze. She is a player to be watched.
Nov-26-08  eremite: At 1974 Olympiad Georgian women (Gaprindashvili and Alexandria) have won the tie-break match vs Romanian team. Obviously rapid tie-break should be played for a case of Dresden too.
Nov-28-08  hellopolgar: i am not trying to be rude...but i thought Maia Chiburdanidze was a male player when i looked at a recent picture of her. how stupid of me to not know what the ex-world champion looks like! or maybe her appearance is different from when she was the world champion?

you be the judge...

Nov-28-08  tud: Georgian women have shown the world that they could have made a difference in the women World Cup.
Nov-28-08  Ladolcevita: Its really a pity that Chiburdanidze didnt participate in World Championship this year....
Nov-29-08  percyblakeney: <Its really a pity that Chiburdanidze didnt participate in World Championship this year....>

Yep, at the same time she could prepare very well for the Olympiad, after almost not playing at all in 2008. Kosteniuk and Hou Yifan have had very tough schedules also after the World Championship, and underperformed here.

Nov-29-08  Ladolcevita: <percyblakeney>
right,form is an important consideration
Dec-01-08  Everyone: btw who became Miss Olympia ?
Dec-04-08  tud: Chiburdanidze?
Dec-09-08  Everyone: n00b cheese tud
Dec-10-08  tud: OK, I will go with Kosteniuk or the georgian Lela or Arakhamia Grant. But I still admire Maia for helping the Georgian team pay back for the Women World Championship absence. Just admire, not more..

Apr-21-12  waustad: Wow, two of my faves went +7 here, Pia Cramling and Eva Moser.
