The 2019 GRENKE Chess Classic was a 10-player round-robin held in Germany from 20-29 April. The first 3 rounds were in Karlsruhe alongside the GRENKE Chess Open, then after two additional rounds in Karlsruhe and a rest day the last 4 rounds were in the Kulturhaus LA8 in Baden-Baden. The field featured World Champion Magnus Carlsen and fellow Top 10 players Fabiano Caruana, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Vishy Anand and Levon Aronian. The time control was 100 minutes for 40 moves, then 50 minutes for 20 moves and then 15 minutes to the end of the game, with a 30-second increment from move 1. If players were tied for first place a rapid play-off would take place. (1) No playoff was necessary, since Carlsen outclassed the field with 7.5/9 and 2990 performance. Lol! I think some people here who are not aware of chess are underestimating what Carlsen did here & in Shamkir. Beating other super GM's in computer chess era with this kind of score is crazy & outrageous. Calling it 'decent' is disrespect to Carlsen & chess! |

It's not the style of everyone to express their opinions with flamboyant adjectives and lots of "&"s. And don't think for a second that Carlsen would prefer high-flown praise to honest, modest appreciation. |

| | HeMateMe: I was reading this book about a legendary gambler from the 1940s to the 60s, Amarillo Slim's name was mentioned. this guy, (Doyle ?) ran a scam every which way possible. Poker, checkers, propositions, every possible game. He would be walking down a street with a well heeled mark (sometimes a mob guy) and they'd approach a fruit stall. The gambler would say to his companion "I'll bet you I can take a piece of fruit off of this guy's cart and throw it on top of that roof (a 40 story building)." His companion, the sucker would look at how high the building was, figure a piece of fruit just didn't have the mass to gain that height and make the $1,000 bet. The gambler would approach the fruit stall, give the peddler five cents for an orange, step back and amazingly heave the thing over the roof of said building, and win the bet. what the other guy didn't know was that earlier in the morning the gambler had approached the fruit peddler and said "I need to leave this orange here. It's special. I'll come by later and buy it, like I've never seen you before. Here's $10, just leave it on the corner, don't let anyone else touch it." The orange had been hollowed out and filled with a large lead weight, the peeling glued back on. |

| | perfidious: <HMM>, Slim, Doyle Brunson and Brian 'Sailor' Roberts were partners for a time and played in the same no-limit holdem games in Texas and elsewhere in the South in the post-WWII epoch. Four WSOP wins amongst them and Brunson is still alive and kicking at well past eighty. Probably the ultimate road gambler of them all was Titanic Thompson, who was not a great holdem player but was known to run the type of scam you mentioned. Fellow called Kevin Cook wrote a bio of Thompson, who was a scratch golfer right and left-handed and used that talent to win fortunes. |

| | HeMateMe: yeah, it was Titanic Thompson, that was the book I read. He hustled in California and other places, beat some pretty good players, if I remember the book. One of the scams he ran was where he bet someone $1,000 he could drive a golf ball 300 yards, on a cold winter day in Chicago. A guy took this bet. So, Thompson says were going to a public park on lake Michigan. there's no way to measure 300 yards, but they'll eyeball it. It's a very windy day, blowing outward towards frozen over lake Michigan. TT, with club in hand turns away from the park and towards the lake, and hits the ball towards lake Michigan. The ferocious wind grabs the ball and takes it along the smooth ice for hundreds of yards. "[the mark] didn't even wait for the ball to stop rolling. He just paid up and walked away." |
