Oct-20-23  goodevans: Meanwhile, back in <Messiah>'s world, MC is having to fight quite hard for a draw in a game where he once enjoyed a substantial advantage.

Bit of a side show though.

chancho: Quite frankly, I don't get the obsession.

Carlsen is no longer champion.

And what happened to the Wesley So future champion talk?

Its been 14 years and nothing.

Oct-20-23  goodevans: So MC hung on for the draw after all but was lucky not to lose. Here's where Puranik missed the win:

Magnus has just played <46...Ka4> which, as things stand, would draw if White allows 47...Re1+. Giving away a pawn with 47.b5+ would take away that threat at the cost of much of White's plus. There was a better way to avoid the draw. Once you've seen it it seems obvious but I must admit I didn't at the time.

Magnus won't be happy losing 2 games in 9 rounds but losing 3 would have really hurt.

Oct-20-23  fabelhaft: Eventually the lower rated of the Nodirbeks won the playoff.
Oct-20-23  goodevans: <Eventually>? Wasn't it 2-0 in the minimum number of games.

Some justice there as Yakubboev's last round win was well deserved whereas Abdusattorov's was handed to him on a plate.

Oct-20-23  stone free or die: <<Sally> Also trolling. Anyone who punts an idiotic post on here hoping to ruffle a few feathers is a punter (...er...forget that one.)>

Well, as that old chestnut goes...

Congratulations Nodirbek and Nodirbek.

Check It Out: Congrats to Nodirbek Yakubboev. This is a notable victory that will go in the history books.
Oct-21-23  goodevans: <greed and death: [...] CG's format is excellent.

Rather a shame that there are no longer as many current tournaments here...>

The trade-off of providing better coverage of fewer tournaments seems a good one and generally suits me to a tee. However, I was hoping to find here coverage of this year's <Joya Sanitary Napkin Tournament>. Alas, it's absent and I had to go to chess.com to find it: https://www.chess.com/events/2023-j...

Oct-21-23  stone free or die: Ouch!

According to https://2700chess.com/ Carlsen lost 17.2 ELO points in this tournament.

Yes a good a game. P. Maghsoodloo - M. Ragger, German League 2023. (White to play and it was 1-0)

Simple tactic: 1.Qxh7+ Kxh7 2.Rh3+ and mate next

Can't believe Ragger missed this.

<Simple tactic: 1.Qxh7+ Kxh7 2.Rh3+ and mate next .>
It is not as simple as that.

Oct-22-23  goodevans: <Simple tactic: 1.Qxh7+ Kxh7 2.Rh3+ and mate next .>

My first thoughts too but then I saw 2...Bxh3. So...

<1.Ng3> so that the N can jump into f5 and block that capture then that simple tactic will work.

Nothing much Black can do to prevent Nf5 and if Black prevents Qxh7+ with <...h5> then the White Q sneaks to h6 via g5 then mates on h8.

  Sally Simpson: Hi Good Evans,

It is very possible Maghsoodloo saw Ng3 with the Nf5 idea first, (it looks OK and winning) then sat on his hands and looked for something better or maybe he had planned his 24th, moves a few moves earlier. He played 24. Rf5!

Oct-22-23  goodevans: <Sally Simpson> Ah, yes. A quicker way to make the block!

Abdusattorov missed a win in a highly tactical and aggressive middle-game. An opponent blundering after an intense defense is not unusual. If you haven’t played it through, it’s worth a look.

Oct-23-23  macer75: Congratulations to the Nodirbeks!

Well, I CAN believe I missed it, lol.
