The 1st Hungaroil-Honvéd international chess tournament was held from 6 (Round 1) to 19 (Round 13) October 1985 in Szirák, Nógrád County, Hungary, in Hotel Kastély (Castle Hotel), an old castle that had been taken over and renovated by the main tournament sponsor, the Hungarian Hydrocarbon Research and Development Institute. The institute and Bp. Honvéd were running the show, sponsored by various oil companies and the Mátraaljai Állami Gazdaság state farm. A total of 14 players from seven different countries had been invited, but, at a late date, some of them backed out. Evgeny Sveshnikov, Amador Rodriguez Cespedes, Jonathan Speelman and Ivan Farago had to be replaced by lesser mortals (Yap, Djuric, Utasi, Petrán). The expectations were still high, but the tournament was played during the middle of the Karpov - Kasparov World Championship Match (1985), and
Round 7 was on the same day as Round 1 of the Montpellier Candidates (1985). As the result, the tournament received little attention outside of Hungary.
The event was officially opened on Saturday 5 October by György Sándor, the president of Bp. Honvéd, after which FIDE president Florencio Campomanes welcomed the participants. There were speeches by State Secretary István Buda, president of the Hungarian Chess Association Sándor Szerényi, and some local politicians and others. Among the familiar faces in the audience were those of Gedeon Barcza and Zsuzsa Veroci. Play had been set to start right after the ceremony, but had to be postponed by one day, apparently because of the late withdrawals. The seven chess tables were set up in the hotel's lounge, while the spectators in the restaurant could follow the action both on demonstration tables and closed-circuit TV monitors. The start on Sunday implied there could be only one rest day (which turned out to be on Monday 14 October, after Round 8). Campomanes, who together with Andronico Yap came from the world championship match in Moscow, praised the arrangement on a press conference he was holding before Round 1.
Pinter was leading by a whole point after Round 11, but he then lost to Yap. After Round 12, Pinter had 8, Tukmakov and Adorjan 7.5. In Round 13, the giant killer Yap won again, now against Adorjan, whilst Tukmakov defeated Klinger. Pinter tried to defeat Knaak, but after nine hours and 82 moves (the game was probably finished on Sunday 20 October) it was a draw. At the closing ceremony, Szerényi thanked the participants and congratulated the winners. He was particularly happy with the fighting spirit. After the presentation of the winners and award of prizes, the arbiter presented the special prizes. The prize for best foreigner went to Tukmakov. Pinter, Yap and Klinger were prized for their % of decisive games, and Pinter also received a holiday with his family at the castle hotel. The prize for best game was given to Uhlmann for Tukmakov vs Uhlmann, 1985. Best combination prize: Klinger, for K Georgiev vs J Klinger, 1985. Utasi received a special prize for T Utasi vs Uhlmann, 1985.
