Sally Simpson: A good tournament this, a very low percentage of draws. Some surprising one move blunders by some very good players.

Long OTB lay off due to covid and too many internet games so the 3d vision is shot to hell, sense of danger has lay dormant.

Aug-18-22  Nosnibor: Harry wont be grieving he`s just beaten Gormally.
Aug-18-22  goodevans: Little shout out for my erstwhile Gravesend clubmate Cliff Chandler who's 2nd= in the over 65s tournament with 3.5/4, just behind GM John Nunn.

Tomorrow he has an appointment with the good doctor. Wishing him well.

HeMateMe: this is...the largest ever weekend Swiss at Premier Hotel?
Aug-19-22  GlennOliver: I'm amazed to see that the highest-rated player is NN.

Who has one credited game, a loss as White to Thomas Donaldson.

I wonder if it is john nuNN playing incognito?

Dionysius1: From the official results website I make NN to be Martin G Walker.

HeMateMe: What if they were to film <The Masked Chess Player> here? Michael Adams could appear, disguised, wearing a Guy Fawkes mask, obliterate the competition and only then be revealed, at the end of the tournament? I'm just thinking of ways to spruce up next year's event!

Or, he and Nigel Short could come disguised as one of Prince Charles polo ponies, one player wearing the head, the other would be the horse's ass. I'm thinking we put Short in the rear, based on past behaviors. Of course, the magic polo pony would completely win. Great theater!

Dionysius1: Could the polo pony work as a kind of tag simul? Maybe to pantomime music.

HeMateMe: Short and Adams have rhythm? Let's not push it...
Aug-20-22  Nosnibor: I can not believe how badly Mark Hebden is doing with only 3/7. Just wondering if he is under the weather?
Aug-21-22  goodevans: GM John Nunn duly wins the Over 65s tournament with 7/7 taking his rating above 2580.

With no one else in that tournament over 2250 and with GM Nicholas Pert the only player in the Championship proper rated over 2500 maybe that's where the good doctor should have been practising.

Sally Simpson: Harry Grieve won it with a really good game where he double-sacced the exchange for rampant Bishops.

Then a pair of Queens each appeared on the board, Harry sacced one his Queens and checkmated his opponent.

Aug-21-22  nok: Harry didn't post yesterday...

Guess he's really focused

HeMateMe: Shouldn't Nunn have been offered the chance to play in the main draw, once it was shown that he would be the highest ranked player? It would be wonderful for him to be British champion again.
Aug-22-22  goodevans: <Sally Simpson: Harry Grieve won it with a really good game...>

An absolutely extraordinary game with which to secure the Championship.

The game hasn't appeared on CG yet but when it does it needs to be made GOTD. Given that it's an 'Agincourt Defence' then surely <Cry 'God for Harry, England, and Saint George!'> is a shoe-in for the pun.

Aug-22-22  Olavi: <HeMateMe: Shouldn't Nunn have been offered the chance to play in the main draw, once it was shown that he would be the highest ranked player? It would be wonderful for him to be British champion again.>

I'd like to hear from Nunn why he chose to play in the seniors in the first place.

FSR: Nunn humiliated the field in the over-65 event, easily winning all his games. His highest-rated opponent was rated over 300 points below him, and only two of his games went 30 moves. None (Nunn?) made it to move 40. https://chess24.com/en/watch/live-t... Sad event. I played in the U.S. Senior Open last month. It had four grandmasters, apparently three more than the British over-65 championship had. https://www.uschess.org/msa/XtblMai...

FSR: <HeMateMe: What about mcshane and Howell? Couldn't a modest $5k appearance fee be found for these players?>

Not likely, since first place was just 5K pounds (about $5,850). That was "more than double the norm of recent years." https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2...

HeMateMe: Hmm...seems the pound has lost value against the dollar. Is Howell the one who just plays part time, works in the securities industry? I guess he has the right idea. You wonder where the next champions will come from if they can't make a living wage playing chess?

First, congratulations! 7-11th ahead of Yermolinsky among others is terrific. Second, the comparison is a bit unfair because the U.S. event was for age 50 and above (I assume I'm right about that because Jesse Krai played and he is exactly 50 years old).

FSR: <keypusher> Thanks! And yes, you're quite right about the age difference between the two events. Dmitry Gurevich, 65, the tournament winner, is the only one of the four GMs old enough for the British event. Yermo is 64, and Kraai and Fishbein are 50 and 54, respectively.
