Jul-28-07  chessmoron: <NIGEL SHORT> A whooping -30 ELO points.
Jul-29-07  anandr: Hari should take around 8 ELO ratings from his performance here. Would have been good had he drawn against Chucky - could have shared the 2nd spot. Good performance, nevertheless!
Jul-29-07  percyblakeney: Very impressive by Ivanchuk, +5 and a 2850+ performance. #2 on the rating list now, and if Anand doesn't play well in Mexico Ivanchuk may reach #1.
Jul-29-07  Eyal: Summary comments by Mig Greengard on Short's and Ivanchuk's performances:

<Short eventually lost a wonderfully romantic game against Bluvshtein, and at 2/9 may head back to the dentist for some happy gas.>

<At this pace [Ivanchuk] is going to make the next rating list an interesting one. But keeping up a great pace has always been his problem. That and he hasn't been running up these numbers against top-10 players, much like how Morozevich would jump up to #4 and then flatline at Corus. Still, it's sad to see him not in Mexico City (he failed to qualify for the candidates in '05). Maybe the winner of the World Cup should play Ivanchuk.>

Jul-29-07  PaulKeres: <NIGEL SHORT> A whooping -30 ELO points.

I'm surprised it's not more actually!

Jul-29-07  PaulKeres: <Eyal>, sorry, who's Mig Greengard ? Thanks
Jul-29-07  Karpova: <PaulKeres: <Eyal>, sorry, who's Mig Greengard ? Thanks> A 2300 player and good friend of Kasparov (some even call him Kasparov's lap dog). Famous for his funny articles ("Mig on Chess at chessbase) and he was an admin at kasparovchess.com before it ceased to exist. He's a link to his website:

Jul-29-07  PaulKeres: Thanks <Karpova> :-)
Jul-29-07  PaulKeres: <Mig Greengard> doesn't seem to have a FIDE card, searching on FIDE online(http://www.fide.com/ratings/). Has not played for ages? or what's that about?
Jul-29-07  Tomlinsky: <PaulKeres> His latest, 2003, and current regular USCF rating is 1824 if that is any help.

WannaBe: I see that Ivanchuk finished with 7/9, maybe he will be in the next Star Trek.
Jul-29-07  notyetagm: <WannaBe: I see that Ivanchuk finished with 7/9, maybe he will be in the next Star Trek.>

And after drawing his first two games (jetlag?), Ivanchuk went a blistering 6/7 (<+5 =2 -0!>) in the last seven rounds.

Jul-29-07  Aspirador: <I see that Ivanchuk finished with 7/9, maybe he will be in the next Star Trek.> After this stellar performance, why settle for anything less than Oprah?
Jul-29-07  pawnofdoom: nice comeback for Sutovsky, getting a 50% score after starting 0/3
Jul-29-07  notyetagm: <pawnofdoom: nice comeback for Sutovsky, getting a 50% score after starting 0/3>

Yes, both Short and Sutovsky started out in the toilet (0-3) but Sutovsky managed to climb out while Nigel got flushed.

Jul-30-07  PaulKeres: <Tomlinsky>, thanks for the Greengard USCF link.
Jul-30-07  Karpova: <PaulKeres: Has not played for ages? or what's that about?>

Here's Mig's own explanation (written in 2004):
<As for OTB rating, I haven't played seriously over the board since I had time in Argentina back in 1997. At the time I had an Argentine rating of 2310 and judging from those around me who also had FIDE ratings it was roughly equivalent. When I finally did play after moving to the USA, in the Amateur Team East in 2003, my Argentine rating was confirmed by the tournament director and I was given a provisional 2300 USCF rating for the event. (Not that I thought I would necessarily perform at that level after so many years away from the board, as was shown quite clearly in my terrible play and time trouble in the 2003 World Open later that year!) And while online ratings are built of foam, I maintain 2400-2500 ratings on the ICC and Playchess.com and acquit myself decently against titled players of all stripes in blitz.> http://www.chessninja.com/cgi-bin/u...

But I suggest you to read the whole thread
http://www.chessninja.com/cgi-bin/u... just because it's quite funny (also involving a well-known kibitzer on <cg.com>)

Jul-30-07  PaulKeres: Thanks <Karpova>!
Jul-30-07  brankat: A good come-back by Super GM N.Short, although somewhat short. At least he clinched the 10th spot with that 1 win.
Jul-30-07  Karpova: <brankat>
You are mean ;-)
At least, his play showed the consistency needed to excel at the highest level.
Jul-30-07  ChessJock: <A good come-back by Super GM N.Short>

His overall performance was rated at 2430 (-253 below his elo). I don't believe you can cite one win as a come-back.

Jul-31-07  PaulKeres: <ChessJock> Quote "His overall performance was rated at 2430 (-253 below his elo). I don't believe you can cite one win as a come-back."

I think brankat might have been a tad sarcastic when he said <A good come-back by Super GM N.Short>

Aug-01-07  edwitten: Ivanchuk won even the blitz event!
Aug-04-07  brankat: <karpova>

<<brankat> You are mean ;-)>>

I Thank You most sincerely. Finally, a sign of appreciation for my efforts :-)

Oct-06-07  samsal27: <maybe they're not all super GMs but this is the strongest round robin in North America probably since MontrĂ©al 1979!> Interesting observation. Which was the strongest round robin in the United States recently?
