Chessgames.com Chess Event Description
Groningen (1989)

"Australian Grandmaster Ian Rogers brilliantly won the main tournament, repeating his resounding success of the previous year. His victory was enhanced by the presence of such leading figures as former world champion Vasili Smyslov, his compatriot Z Azmajparashvili, Indian Anand and others of renowned experience. The young Dutch players Jeroen Piket and Joris Brenninkmeijer were brilliant, while the 1989 Dutch national champion Rini Kuijf disappointed. The performance of the Yugoslavian GM S. Martinovic was disastrous, with only one point to his name after nine games." (Jaque, transl.)
