Introduction
The Nottingham committee have made arrangements for an International Chess Tournament in connection with the Counties Chess Association Meeting. Prizes: First prize, 40, second 20, third 10, and fourth 5. The contest to commence on Monday. The competitors in the B.C.A. Congress just concluded have signified their intention of taking part. (1)
The Counties Chess Association meeting was fixed to be held in Nottingham this year. The local committee, impressed by the success of the B.C.A. Congress, resolved to profit by the opportunity of so many masters being assembled in London to hold a masters' tournament in their town, simultaneously with the C.C.A. meeting. The credit of the initiative belongs to Mr C. Sipman, of Nottingham, who was most energetic in his efforts, in conjunction wih the local secretary (Mr T. Marriott), to being about the desired meeting of the masters. The following is the list of competitors originally entered: Messrs Blackburne, Bird, Burn, Gunsberg, Hanham, Mackenzie, Mason, Pollock, Schallopp, Taubenhaus, and Zukertort. Upon their arrival from London they found that some of the provincial players had also entered for the chief contest—viz., Messrs Thorold, Rynd, Chambers, Fraser, the Rev. A. B. Skipworth, and Rev. J. Owen. The masters feared that the tournament would extend to a longer period than they anticipated, whereupon a consultation with the local committee took place, and the result was with the withdrawal of Messrs Chambers, Fraser, Owen, Mackenzie, and Mason. Blackburne retired the following morning, before play commenced, and the number of competitors was reduced to the following eleven players: Messrs Bird, Burn, Gunsberg, Hanham, Pollock, Rynd, Schallopp, Taubenhause, Thorold, and Zukertort. (2)
Summary
Skipworth retired after having played two games, which are, of course, cancelled, according to the rules. (2)
