Format: Three Round team tournament.
Introduction
The official lists were received last night of the men who will represent Columbia, Harvard, Yale and Princeton universities in the tenth annual match for the intercollegiate chess trophy, which will be played during the Christmas holidays. Each college will send four men, who will play as a team, contesting one round with each of the other teams. The players will be paired according to chess strength.
The teams are as follows, the men being named in the order of their playing strength:
Harvard—Claude T. Rice, George E. Hyde, W. Catchings and L. P. Carr; substitutes, A. W. Belcher and P. W. Bridgman.
Princeton—James B. Hunt, J. H. Hankinson, A. J. Pilgram and J. H. Dodd; substitute, Richard Ely.
Yale—J. F. Sawin, E. B. Adams, C. A. Roberts and H. C. Russ; substitutes, Clifford H. Owen and Charles C. Russ.
Columbia—Frank H. Sewall, Howard A. Keeler, Benjamin R. Von Sholly and George W. Tucker, jr.; substitutes, R. C. Schroeder, jr., and George A. Ellis.
Nine annual matches have been played so far for the trophy. Columbia won the first two, Harvard the following six, and Columbia again won lat year. The first eight contests were played with teams of two men representing the colleges, and six days were required to complete the tournament. Difficulty was experienced in getting the students to give up their entire Christmas vacation to chess, and last year the four men team plan was adopted, a one round tournament being played in three days.
The games will be played at the Columbia Grammar School. Fifty-fourth-st., near Madison-ave., on December 26, 27 and 28, at 1 p.m.
The tournament is in charge of a committee of four, comprising one member from each of the alumni associations of the colleges, as follows: E. A. Caswell, Yale; B. H. Campbell, Columbia; J. W. Brannan, Harvard, and Cleveland H. Dodge, Yale (sic; Princeton). (1)
All the games will be played at a time limit of fifteen moves to the hour, and will begin at 1 p.m. and continue to 10 p.m., with two hours' intermission from 6 to 8 o'clock. To-morrow Columbia will meet Princeton and Harvard Yale, while on Saturday Columbia will be opposed to Harvard and Princeton to Yale. On the latter day there will be no intermission, but all the games left unfinished will be adjudged by the referees, Eugene Delmar and Herman Helms. (2)
Preceded by 9th Intercollegiate Cup, New York (1900).
Followed by 11th Intercollegiate Cup, New York (1902).
