Jan-11-08 | | Riverbeast: I'm surprised to see 2430 ELO players in this tournament (Babujian), I thought Armenia was stocked with 2600+ players. Maybe he was a qualifier of some sort? |
|
Jan-11-08 | | hovik2003: I think traditionally they include one or two IMs in the players list to make the event more popular and entertaining, or could be as you mentioned they have won regional championship other than Yerevan district. |

Jan-22-08 | | jamesmaskell: From official website:
"Due to ill health, GM Ashot Anastasian left the tournament. Also, GM Tigran Nalbandian missed his game in Round 9 due to family reasons." |
|
Jan-23-08 | | Harvestman: No criticism of anyone here, but Nalbandian's withdrawal from the last round seems to have given Karen Asrian a free point, which was enough to ensure that he won the championship. That seems a bit unsatisfactory for all concerned. Or am I missing something? On the other hand Tigran L. Petrosian, having led almost all the way, finished 5th, having scored very poorly in the latter rounds. Must be a huge disappointment for him. |
|
Jan-24-08 | | arsen387: Nalbandian withdrew not in last round. He played only some rounds(less than 7, I just dont remember the exact number) in the beginning of the tounament and then because of health problems didn't play last rounds and in all that games that he didin't play defeat was registered. So not only Asrian was awarded with that easy point.
For Tigran L. Petrosian this of course must be a great disappointment but I hope he will overcome it and will have a good performance in Gibraltar tournament.
Congratulations to Karen Asrian for becoming Champion of Armenia. Great
performance in last rounds.
Though I think the revelation of this tournament was Samvel Ter-Sahakyan who has fulfilled the GM norm at such a young age. Hope he'll keep on moving towards Chess Olymp with this same speed. |
|
Jan-24-08 | | Harvestman: Thanks very much for the extra information <arsen387>. It makes things much clearer. Withdrawals for things like health and family problems can't always be avoided, even if they do sometimes unbalance the scores a bit. |
|
Jan-26-08 | | Murphyman: I believe Tigran Nalbandian has a member of his family (his father perhaps) who is very unwell and this probably explains his playing some rounds and not others.
Interestingly Grandmaster Anastasian is reported to be on the mend, having slipped on ice and broken his cocxyk (tail bone) - but many years ago it was complications after fracturing his leg when slipping on snow/ice that killed GM Isaac Boleslavsky |
