Chessgames.com Chess Event Description
Tuzla Interzonal (Women) (1987)

"Although many expected the Soviet women to triumph and advance, this success is still a good feeling for them. This is what Nana Ioseliani, an outstanding representative of the Georgian chess school, said after the tournament. She spoke with joy about her young rival, 19-year-old Ketevan Arakhamia, and praised the only non-Soviet advancer, the Polish Agnieszka Brustman, who defeated Semenova 4:1 in the playoff match that decided the advance, thus becoming one of the world champion candidates for the second time in a row. ... There was a very big fight for the 2nd-3rd place after me. And it seemed that Brustman and Semenova were the surest candidates for advancing. This seemed logical, since they were one point ahead of Arakhamia. However, it seems that these kinds of World Championship interzonal tournaments with advancement have a special atmosphere. A lot depends on nerves, and it is not surprising that in the battle of nerves the young Arakhamia had an unassailable advantage. Undoubtedly, this little girl is the hero of Tuzla. It was her first time playing in such a high-level tournament, and she not only showed brilliant offensive play, but also surprised with her fighting skills." (Ioseliani in Sakkélet, transl.)
