Chessgames.com Chess Event Description
Stockholm Interzonal Playoff (1962)

Six players from the Stockholm Interzonal (1962) would qualify for the Curacao Candidates (1962). But sixth place was shared by Stein, Benkö and Gligoric, necessitating a playoff. This took place in Stockholm as a double round robin right after the Interzonal. Should Stein win the playoff he would be the reserve for his countrymen, as each country was allowed to have only three players in the Candidates tournament. The player placed no. 2 in the playoff would then qualify. (1)

Gligoric started with two losses, and after the fifth game he could not catch up with the other two players. The sixth game was not played. (2)

Stockholm, Sweden, 9-13 March 1962

Benkö advanced to the Curacao Candidates (1962).

Dec-09-21  Helios727: "as each country was allowed to have only three players in the Candidates tournament," I think they meant 5 was the limit since we know that Petrosian, Geller, Keres, Korchnoi and Tal were Soviets.

perfidious: Fischer begged to differ. (laughs)
Dec-10-21  Helios727: Fischer had to play against those 5 Soviets in the Candidates match-tournament of 1962. So he knew darn well.

perfidious: Fischer knew what he knew; one could have shown him the five Soviet passports, along with their places of origin, and he would have sworn to his dying day that they were all 'Russians'.

MarcusBierce: So Stein got bit by the rules <twice>, first here, and then two years later: Amsterdam Interzonal (1964)
