Sep-13-20  aporia: After six rounds, 6 wins for white and 13 for black. Similar oddities arise in the chess960 tournaments with computer programs, e.g., rounds with all white wins or all black wins.

Sep-13-20  Doktorn: Super fun event! I hope we will see more of chess960 in the future. I love it when the players has to start thinking and evaluating the position from move one.
Sep-14-20  Sokrates: Nakamura and Carlsen in a tie for the first, and no Armageddon this time (fortunately, since I don't think anyone could stand another discussion of its terms :-))

So suffered an unexpected defeat against Firouzja - but So can be proud of his performance here, being the only one to defeat Carlsen.

I fully agree with you, <Doktorn> about the Chesss960 and the games in this event. This is where pure chess talent shines.

Sep-14-20  SometimesGood: <Doktorn: Super fun event! I hope we will see more of chess960 in the future. I love it when the players has to start thinking and evaluating the position from move one.> It is interesting that the best in normal chess are the best in 960.
Sep-14-20  RookFile: <AylerKupp: Given that he was retired and with "issues", what else did he have to do? I'm also retired, and that gives me lots of time to come up with lots of ideas, most of them pretty bad. >

You're making my point for me. Fischer didn't have to do anything. Nobody here holds it against all the other future champions when they just retired and stopped playing. Yet Fischer gave us two important innovations that benefit us today.

Dionysius1: I see Nakamura had a Tournament Performance Rating of 2907. What's the highest TPR there's ever been? I assume it would have to be recent, given that it's calculated from the contestants' Elo ratings.

Diademas: <The highest known tournament performance rating is 3103, achieved by Karen H. Grigoryan, when he scored a perfect 9/9 at the 2019 Cidade de Famalicão tournament.

The highest known performance rating at the top level is 3098 by Fabiano Caruana at the 2014 Sinquefield Cup.>

Congrats to Naka for ending up co-champ.

Dionysius1: That's some TPR! I don't know the background to Grigoryan's, but I remember Caruana scoring 7/7 and ultimately 8.5/9 at the 2014 Sinquefield Cup. Thanks <Diademas>!

I hadn't heard about Grigoryan's achievement either.
Ps! Caruana scored 8.5/10, not 8.5/9.
Sinquefield Cup (2014) The <CG> tournament page lists Caruana's TPR as 3103. I don't know what the correct number is.

AylerKupp: <<RookFile> You're making my point for me.>

I'm not sure what point I made for you since I'm not sure what point you were trying to make. That Fischer, after he retired and presumably had a lot of time on his hands, created in 1996 a chess variant that was a simplified version of a variant that Benko created in 1978, many years earlier (https://www.chess.com/forum/view/ch...)? Fischer added additional constraints to the initial placement of the pieces and so reduced the number of different starting positions. I suppose that's "progress" and therefore can be considered an innovation.

<Nobody here holds it against all the other future champions when they just retired and stopped playing.>

And I don't think that anyone here holds it against Fischer that he retired and stopped playing. After all, hat's a player's decision. But most (all?) other champions retired after typically long careers when advancing age or other circumstances had dulled their play. What disappoints most of us here is <when> Fischer effectively retired and stopped playing; at the top of his game and at the peak of his career. Who knows how much better he might have become? That deprived all of us of many wonderful games. But again, it's a player's decision when to retire.

Sep-16-20  Sokrates: Well said about Fischer, <AK>.
