  2. 1986 Capablanca memorial (group A)
    <under construction>

    Held at* Cienfuegos (see Vladimirov vs D Barbulescu, 1986 for place) or Havana (in a few of the other pgn location fields), Cuba.

    * This still needs to be sorted out, since Cienfuegos was for many years a past historical place for the tournament; or perhaps Cienfuegos is only a short drive from the Havana capital if some organizer were to split up the event across 2 or more cities.

    See http://il-chess.net/icb_pdf/ICB_197... (page 10 - Harold Winston was the author of the report) for the synopsis of the 1978 event: 8 rounds, 85 teams, 369 players from 25 States, Canada and the Dominican Republic assembled between 26th-30 December, 1978 - at the Ramada O'Hare Inn at Chicago.

    The winning Yale A's team (captained by Michael Rohde (7 total points out of 8) and 2nd board Jonathan Tisdall (4.5 of 5 total games played) outranked many other team's top board in rating) had an average rating in excess of 2200, followed closely in average rating by the U of Pennsylvania A (defending champs of 1977) team and Florida, headed by Gregg Small. It is possible that T J Costigan vs M Rohde, 1978 could have been part of the Dec Pan-Am Intercollegiate event at Chicago, although its pgn is ambiguous. Twins Richard Costigan and Thomas J Costigan (scored 7.5 in his 8 played games to win top 2nd board prize) played for U of Pennsylvania A, Peter Nurmi and David Lavin played for York U and Diana Lanni (then ranked 14th of women in the USA) of U of Michigan.

    Minnesota A upset U of Toronto in the 4th round to make a 4-way tie with Yale A, U of Pennsylvania A and Florida. After many hours, Nurmi recovered an early round win against Purdue B after Lavin lost his match with Purdue. The 5th round saw a Yale 4-0 smash versus Florida with Pennsylvania A edging out Minnesota A 2.5-1.5, allowing Pennsylvania A to meet Yale (0.5-3.5) in the 6th round.

    Finally, Yale then beat Minnesota, and Pennsylvania took 2nd by beating Arizona state. Yale A not only won all their matches, but also did not lose a single of their 32 games. Sergey Kudrin of Columbia won the top board prize of 1st board and Peter Stein (IITB) scored 7 points out of 8 to win top 3rd board prize.

  6. 1986 World Junior chess championship
    <under construction>

    Previous: Game Collection: 1985 World Junior chess championship

    Next: Game Collection: 1987 World Junior chess championship

    Held at Gausdal in August* (*according to J Piket vs F Hellers, 1986 but also see javascript:OpenWin("/perl/editornotes?kid=G11083- 02") by biographer Stonehenge who seems to think that this was part of the main (or were there more that these pairs of players participated in in Norway at this month?!) Gausdal tournament).

    It's the only game of Gausdal 1986 or WJr 1986 or similar so far that I've come across which hints at a month.

    Walter Arencibia Rodriguez and Simen Agdestein were 2 of the top scorers in this event. Ferdinand Hellers , Josef Klinger and Evgeny Bareev trailed them by a half-point.

  8. 1986 WYCC (open) U-16
    <under construction>

    Previous: Dreev vs P Wolff, 1983 and perhaps also P K Wells vs P Wolff, 1984 were part of the 1983 event (does the latter game suggest that the tournament was played into the new year?!), since the 1984 U16 WYCC was held at Champigny-sur-Marne, France. S Agdestein vs Granda Zuniga, 1982 was part of the 1982 WYCC held at Ecuador.

    Held at Rio Gallegos, Argentina. Vladimir Akopian won his section.

    12 games, 1986

  9. 1986-7 Canadian Junior championship
    <under construction>

    Vinny Puri (representing Ontario) later was able to advance to the Game Collection: 1987 World Junior chess championship since the tournament was played between 1986 December 27th until 1987 January 4th at Edmonton. He tied with the 2 other Manitoba players Kevin Gentes and Rehan Huda with a score of 8.5/11. Other players from Nova Scotia, Quebec, Saskatchewan, British Columbia and Ontario also played a number of players from the host province of Alberta.

  13. 1987 Spraggett - Ivanov
    <under construction>

    Held at Montreal, with Spraggett leading 3½-2½ in these 6 games.

    table[
    Spraggett 0 1 ½ ½ ½ 1 3½
    Ivanov 1 0 ½ ½ ½ 0 2½]table

    Not to be confused with the other Game Collection: 1981 Ivanov - Spraggett match.

    Was this held before or after the 1987 Canadian championship, since both players tied for share of 1st-2nd at the Game Collection: 1986 Canadian championship in Winnipeg.

    5 games, 1987

  14. 1987 World Junior chess championship

  18. 1988 Capablanca memorial (group A)
    <under construction>

    Held at Cuba.

    <Probably,> the games below don't have anything to do with https://translate.googleusercontent... (5th Pan-Am championship, 18 player, 9 round swiss, supervised under FIDE at Cuba, 20 February - 3 March as a date range). Granda Zuniga, for instance, does not show up in the Pan-Am crosstable, keeping things still a bit of a puzzle of why he has 2 round 10 games for this Capablanca mem. tournament (or were there a few play-off games mixed in with the regular games during upload)?!

    Was this tournament held at any similar date-range time, with such titled players having toured the country that year?
