May-28-05  nfazli: I've noticed as white fischer only plays 1e4,at least in this data base, and I've heard the phrase "1e4 is best by the test"did fischer come up with that phrase?
May-28-05  aw1988: Yes, he did. He could also draw God with the Ruy Lopez. :)

<as white fischer only plays 1e4,at least in this data base> Did you try searching for 1. c4 too? I agree it's rare for him to play other than 1. e4, but here are several instances where Fischer plays 1. c4 against Spassky in this database:

Fischer vs Spassky, 1972
Fischer vs Spassky, 1972
Fischer vs Spassky, 1972
Fischer vs Spassky, 1992

Jul-18-07  champsylove: aw1988, I love that quote.
Not sure Fischer did possess omniscience on the board, but he certainly gave that impression. What an amazing individual he was, I am truly sad that so much pain has been inflicted and experienced by Mr. Robert James Fischer.
Sep-21-09  kingfu: Ok, Fischer liked to play 1. b3 on occasion for surprise value. Go to the Fischer page and look up games 790, 807, 833 and 840. The games usually turned into a reverse Sicilian. Fischer was 4-0 in these games! Later he switched to 1. c4 for the surprise opening. Spassky took the black side of a standard Queens gambit and got thrashed by Fischer in the 1972 Championship, game 6.
Sep-21-09  AnalyzeThis: I'm sure that Fischer would have done fine with any reasonable opening.
Oct-28-09  Garech: 21 ... Ne7 is surely a blunder here - what's the general consensus?
Oct-05-16  zydeco: Fischer gets revenge for his horrible loss to Letelier at Mar Del Plata.

17....exd4 triggers a long forcing line which seems to work out for white. 17....dxc5 is more balanced.
