Mrs. Michaelsen likely did not see this line which escaped mate. Perhaps, with the flurry of attacking moves against her ill-defended position, she had an extreme case of The Vapors.

Mar-28-14		moodini: To <morfishine> and anybody else that gets annoyed if the GOTD is not of a suitably high quality: If your mood is soured or you day ruined due to a poor quality GOTD then perhaps it is you, not chessgames, that need to change? Relax a little! It is only a game and it is a free service. Sometimes the games are of high quality, sometimes not. If you really want to analyse only the highest quality games, then stop clicking on the GOTD and go and find some for yourself.

Mar-28-14		sofouuk: can't help adding adding my own off-hand variation on the theme (a certain Robert Leahy was black) 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nge7 4.Nc3 f5 5.d4 fxe4 6.Nxe5 d5 7.Nxd5 Nxd5 8.Qh5+ g6 9.Nxg6 Nf6 10.Bf7+ Kxf7 11.Ne5+ Ke6 12.Qf7 Kf5 13.g4# it took a while to see that the Nf6 would be pinned allowing g4 to mate - always suspected something similar would have been played many times before but this is the first time I've seen it :)

Mar-28-14		keypusher: Duitsland is apparently Dutch for Germany, so I guess a Dutch chess magazine saw fit to publish this game. It would be interesting to see the original item.

Mar-28-14		gawain: Cute game, which I do not recall ever coming across despite all my childhood reading of books like The Fireside Book of Chess with its entertaining chapter "Odd but True." Although there are nice mating positions between the Michaelsens--the mate with N, Q and P in the middle of the board is especially nice--I find the finish not quite satisfactory because of the escape of the Black king after 10...Kd7. I guess that real games (as opposed to puzzles which must not leave loose ends) and real relationships, too, are sometimes beautiful despite some messiness.

Mar-28-14		Phony Benoni: <morfiishine> Believe me, I gave it some thought before submitting this one. It's rather hypocritical when I've been one of those calling for higher quality GOTDs. On the other hand, I have a strong sense of humor and sometimes it wins out over reason and logic. See my games. While this isn't a high quality game, at least it's not dull or decided by a one-move queen hang. And the situation is amusing. Nobody asked, but "How I Met Your Mother" is a long-running U.S. television series that will be airing its final episode on Monday. Mar-28-14		Once: There is something of the exhibitionist in this one, methinks. The good doctor gives his wife rook odds, administers what can only be described as a good spanking and then feels the need to publish the game for all to see. This game was played in 1884, so we are in the era of corsets, handlebar moustaches and quill pens. Had it been played today, one would imagine that a video recorder and the internet would have been involved. "No, no, no, of course I won't show it to anyone else, my dear." And to think that is only a few days since the pun referenced Toni Basil in her late thirties wearing her high school cheerleaders outfit. What is the world coming to? Or is it just me? Man walks into a doctor complaining that he can't stop thinking about sex. The doctor decides to give him the Rorschach inkblot test. He shows the man the first inkblot and asks him what he sees. "A couple making love." The doctor shows him another inkblot. "A woman taking her clothes off," says the man. On and on it goes, with each inkblot eliciting a response in like vein. Eventually the doctor says: "Well, it's confirmed. You definitely have an addiction problem." The man shrugs. "I don't know why you are talking about me. You are the one with all these dirty pictures..."
