Feb-16-11  Knightrider655321: stupid move come on f4????????????
Mar-05-11  Lil Swine: oh yeah, my alekhine number's a little off track.
Mar-26-11  redorc19: wow... almost all on this page deserve to get ignored on my profile for wasting time kibitzing here... then again, I am kibitzing about others kibitzing, so... never mind!!!
Mar-27-11  ForeverYoung: Lance is a player to be reckoned with. I haven't seen him for a number of years. Mr. Wood? Unfortunately he passed away a few years back. Way too young. He was a strong player in is own right.
Apr-11-11  technical draw: The white player's name is not Lance Darling. After foolishly losing this game he turned to his wife and said, "Lance, darling". The rest is just urban legend.

GrahamClayton: <whiskeyrebel>this game looks like a hoax blindly reprinted probably from "northwest chess" magazine.

whiskeyrebel,

The Idaho Chess Quarterly for October 1957 states that the game was published in "Chess World", December 1951, with the players being Kemp v Watts.

Phony Benoni: No doubt this "game" has actually happened, but this version is almost surely a joke. As I mentioned earlier, I played Lance Darling around this time; he was rated 1965, and obviously would not have fallen for this through ignorance.

"NWC April" undoubtedly means the April issue of Northwest Chess magazine, and we all know what happens in April. I seem to remember Darling being from Oregon, so he probably knew what was going on.

Of course, I also remember he had a very attractive girl friend who sat next to him during our game. She probably distracted me more than him, but you never know...

Jan-03-12  King Death: <chesthinker: what is deep rybka's 20-ply eval after 2.f4>

Yeah, and how long does the engine take for its eval?

Jun-13-12  Desukaan: Lance darling, you are the worst chess player ever.
Sep-05-12  wildrookie: Wow! Wood plays deeeeep chess indeed.
Sep-12-12  The Last Straw: You're lucky,<Phony Benoni>, to have met this guy. If you somehow meet him again, ask him to narrate this game :-) .
Sep-12-12  The Last Straw: Note: Please don't tease Lance, other kibitzers.
Sep-12-12  Shams: <"NWC April" undoubtedly means the April issue of Northwest Chess magazine, and we all know what happens in April.>

As an on-again, off-again subscriber I can vouch that Northwest Chess does indeed go in for April 1 silliness.

Jul-05-13  fgh: 2. f4?! is a dubious move. Better is 2. f3! with compensation for the exposed king.

Finally, a ray of enlightenment in this opening. It always got old, studying the latest developments in the King's Indian or QGD.

Nov-28-14  paavoh: Back in high school in the 70s, I managed to win such a casual speed game between the classes. My opponent was known for his hyper-aggressive style and he begun with 1.f4.

I was known for playing always the French or QGD and responded here with 1.-e6 too. My opponent said "More attack" and pushed 2.g4. I replied: "That's a good idea" and ended the game with 2.- Qh4#.

Domdaniel: <paavoh> I had the same experience in a school game in the 70s. As I remember, my opponent was trying different pawn pushes in each game... so I waited patiently for g4/f4 to turn up.

Domdaniel: Draw number: I drew with Miles, who drew with Kasparov.

Wins: I beat D.McMahon, who beat Keogh, who beat Stahlberg, who beat Nimzowitsch, which takes us back to the dark ages...

It's a silly game. Amusing, though.

Aug-04-17  Howard: This "game" also took place in a USCF tournament back in late 1977. CL&R quipped that this game was over with "before all the clocks were started".
Nov-01-18  SpiritedReposte: Darling seems to have stolen my opening preparation here.

After many hours of careful analysis I have concluded...black has the advantage.

Dec-12-22  generror: "probably analysis"

Surely, a joke.

"And don't call me surely."

Surely, darling.

Nov-28-23  Messiah: What a mess!
Mar-21-24  Allderdice83: When I started playing a couple years ago on Chess.com, the very first game I played was a Fool's Mate, only it took 3 moves. Of course, I had Black.
Mar-21-24  Messiah: Maybe White thought it is a FRC960 tourney.

Obviously you have been studying Kramnik's oeuvre. Niemann vs Kramnik, 2023.
