FSR: The position after 2...g5 would make a good puzzle for Monday, April 1, 2024.

perfidious: This future POTD looks to be an effort in need of assistance from <fishie>.

FSR: Though this conundrum was beyond these players' abilities, White solved it in H Klip vs T Bottema, 1990. Bravo!

tamar: Good puzzle for April 1st: White not to play
Sep-12-23  Damenlaeuferbauer: Without doubt, this is the most exiting and important game of the year 2023! After the game Hans Moke Niemann spoke for himself and shared a secret with me, that after 1.-,f6!? he was out of his opening preparation (he prepaired the line 1.e4,e5 2.Bc4,Nc6 3.Qh5,Nf6 the whole day together with the Botez sisters, but they could not come to a clear evaluation) and after 2.-,g5?! he could not calculate all lines until the end and did not get any vibes from his anal balls, so tragically he resigned the game in a slightly better position. As <FSR> pointed out correcty, sometimes much lower rated players see a move, which even GMs do not consider: In the game Hans Klip vs. Tom Bottema, Dieren 1990, 3.Qh5!? seems to be the refutation of 2.-,g5?!. In a video analysis after the game, Vladimir Kramnik frankly told us, that he wanted to play the Dutch Stonewall, but unfortunately mixed up the files. I guess, that the very interesting opening 1.-,f6!? will be repeated in the 2024 men's and women's candidates tournaments, but probably with some little improvements for black, e.g. 1.e4,f6!? 2.d4,Nh6 3.c4,g5 4.Qh5+,Nf7! with unclear/equal play, but certainly not 2.-,Na6?! 3.c4,g5? with decisive advantage for white. Food for thoughts for Carlsen, Caruana, Nepo, Pragg, their seconds and the silicon monsters in the next months!
Sep-23-23  jerseybob: So with his attempted sui-mate Vlad is proving Hans is a cheater? I smell virtue signaling!
Nov-13-23  drleper: "virtue signaling" is quite an annoying phrase.

Anyway, Kramnik won, Niemann was out of book and completely at sea without the machine.

Nov-24-23  Teyss: The explanation for this, er, game is Kramnik vs Niemann, 2023 played just before and Kramnik's allegations Niemann cheated. Excellent analysis by <Damenlaeuferbauer> with one exception: it's not the game of the year but of the decade. Century.

Actually Kraminik desperately needed to go to the toilet so he forced a quick win with a secret weapon rarely played before, 2...g5!! forcing instant resignation.

For memo Niemann beat Kramnik twice two weeks afterwards: Kramnik vs Niemann, 2023 and Niemann vs Kramnik, 2023. Note how as white he wisely avoided 1.e4?? which allows the killer moves 1...f6! and 2...g5!! That kid is learning fast.

Nov-28-23  jerseybob: <drleper: "virtue signaling" is quite an annoying phrase.> With an annoying reality attached to it.
Oct-16-24  Freelance Assassin: Nothing he could do!
Dec-07-24  drleper: <jerseybob: <drleper: "virtue signaling" is quite an annoying phrase.> With an annoying reality attached to it.> A reality usually existing only in the minds of the people who throw the phrase around ;)

perfidious: There are one or two about the site who adore invoking 'virtue signalling'.
Dec-07-24  stone free or die: First time I saw this game. Hans did right by resigning.

Niemann might still need to do some growing up, but he's also had to put up with a lot of crap just to play.

<<drleper> Anyway, Kramnik won, Niemann was out of book and completely at sea without the machine.>

No irony here folks!

Apr-01-25  Teyss: At last Missy picks a relevant game for April Fools' Day. I had submitted <Better a witty fool than a foolish wit> but Missy never misses an opportunity to select one of her own puns.
Apr-01-25  Damenlaeuferbauer: After his retirement as professional chess player in 2019, the 14th undisputed world champion Vladimir Kramnik found out, that the ONLY equalising move after 1.e4! ("Best by test!", Robert James "Bobby" Fischer) is 1.-,f6!, and NOT 1.-,e5, 1.-,c5, 1.-,e6 or 1.-,c6, as generations of chess players (and the Vladimir Kramnik of the 90s and 2000s himself!) thought. I hope, that he will write an opening monograph on this VERY important topic one day!
Apr-01-25  Pyrandus: BLUNDER
Apr-01-25  maxi: White should not have resigned in this position. Very premature. There are still a lot of defensive posibilities left.
Apr-01-25  dehanne: Respect your elders.
