Jan-30-21  Xeroxx: It's a pun isn't it?
I hate puns. Worst form of humor ever.

<Xeroxx> You just copied that opinion from somewhere.

Get it?

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAH

Jan-30-21  catlover: The "Pterodactyl Defense"? Is 3...c5 the move that constitutes a Pterodactyl?

Breunor: Going through the game on the computer, white is up about .5 to .75 through most of the opening.

Score goes down slightly after a series of moves, there isn't one move that is 'this is the problem move'.

After 24 Ne1 though black is up -1, computer prefers h4 which it lists as even, so this move cost it a pawn equivalent.

However, white can get to even with 27 Kg3 or even Ke1.

1) =0.00 (27 ply) 27.Kg3 Rc6 28.Nf2 Ne6 29.Bc1 Nc5 30.Bf4

2) -0.27 (26 ply) 27.Kg1 d3 28.Rh3 Bd4+ 29.Be3 Bxe3+ 30.Nxe3 exf3 31.Nxd3 Nxd3 32.Bxd3 Rxe3 33.Bf1 a5 34.gxf3 a4 35.f4 Rxh3 36.Bxh3 Re3 37.Bf1 a3 38.Kf2 Rf3+ 39.Ke1 Kf7 40.Rd1 Be4 41.Rd7+ Ke6 42.Ra7 a2 43.Rxa2 Rxf4 44.Ra7 Rxh4

So 27 Nc2 can be thought of as 'the losing move' sending the score to -1.72:

1) -1.72 (24 ply) 27...e3+ 28.Kg3 e2 29.Bxe2 Rxe2 30.Nb4 a5 31.Nd5 Ne6 32.Bd6 Rd8 33.Nf4 Nxf4 34.Bxf4 d3 35.c5 a4 36.c6 Bxc6 37.b7 Bxb7 38.Rxb7 a3 39.Ra7 a2 40.Ne3 Bd4 41.Ra4 d2 42.Rd1 a1=B 43.Raxa1 Bxa1 44.Rxa1 Rxe3 45.Bxe3 d1=Q 46.Rxd1 Rxd1

Jan-30-21  Granny O Doul: As humor goes, puns are not "bad" but they are supporting players, not stars. You wouldn't get up on stage, grab a mic, say "A comic bomb and soon a giant crowd rose" and then wait for applause.

Eggman: <<Catlover>> If you Google "Caxton named openings" you should be able to find a downloadable list of names of openings which, as far as I can tell, is used by this very site. And the answer to your question is 'yes'!

Haven“t you said that before ?

Jan-31-21  Diana Fernanda: The level of both players is low, it seems to be a street game, they urgently need to read basic opening books, a match to forget.

keypusher: Allan had better Days. D Allan vs L Day, 1972

And worse ones. Keres vs D Allan, 1975

Feb-01-21  thegoldenband: There'd better be a Bill Murray-related pun tomorrow.

IMlday: As I used the terms, a Pterodactyl was simply a cross between a "Rat" (1..g6) and a Dragon where play did not transpose to one or the other. The basic reptilian idea is to breath fire down the long diagonal. A bonus was that when original complex positions arise early in the game a logical consequence was time trouble later on. This was a much more serious matter in 1980 before increments were invented. Anyway Black has some clear compensation for the Knight: two strong centre pawns, no targets or weak points and a slew of obvious moves that improve the position. White's c-pawn is isolated and easily attacked while his N/a3 is awkwardly placed and the N/e2 also impeding his development. I thought at the time that the most dangerous plan involved 13.c4 with the idea Ne2-c3 and N/a3-c2-e3. 14.f3 also looks passive compared to 14.h4 intending Rh3. After 27.Kg3 Rc6 28.Nf2 I would have played to win with ..a5 since his clock was down to a few minutes for a dozen difficult moves.

Feb-01-21  Brenin: GOTD = Game Of Three Days.
Feb-01-21  morfishine: Well, they discontinued the bookie game, either due to budgetary constraints or a manpower shortage. A pity too since over 100 members played each leg of this fun and entertaining game

Perhaps the <GOTD> has also received the axe, which on the contrary, would be a welcome relief

Feb-01-21  sfm: <Xeroxx: It's a pun isn't it?> Hang on, let me check...
Yes, I am afraid it is.

<I hate puns.>
So do I. But then again, I love to hate them!
I would miss not missing them at all if they were taken away.

<Worst form of humor ever.> That is ridiculous. There are many kinds of much-worse humor.

OK. Right now. I can't think of any.
But obviously it is completely unreasonable to claim that some random chess website with limited readership should have had the contributors to be able to deliver "worst form of humor ever".

But keep trying, folk, we are getting closer!

BTW, this pun is quite good. Not that I enjoyed it, of course, don't ever accuse me of that. But many other puns have ruined my whole day.

- - -

Oh, and good game, BTW.
Well played by White, gaining advantage, but around move 23 it starts getting worse.

Feb-01-21  thegoodanarchist: First, it was game of the day.

Then, it was game of the week!

Now it is game of the month??

FSR: It will be Groundhog Day in half an hour. I'm guessing that has something to do with this perpetual pun.
