Sep-13-21  rbhgroup: <Phony Benoni> roger that... spent several minutes looking at 49... g4+ after 48...Qf2+... the idea was to lure the White king forward to his ultimate demise... although the use of the word "idea" is perhaps a tad generous...
Sep-13-21  rbhgroup: ok, one minute anyway...
Sep-13-21  Chess for life: What time does the puzzle get posted? It used to be midnight USA eastern time.

al wazir: <Chess for life: What time does the puzzle get posted?> I think it's midnight Greenwich.
Sep-13-21  Nullifidian: 48... ♕f2+ 49. ♔xh3 (♔h1 ♕g1#) ♕f3#
Sep-13-21  agb2002: Black has a knight and a pawn for a bishop.

White threatens Rxe8+ and Kxh3.

The white king is already in a mating net, 48... Qf2+:

A) 49.Kxh3 Qf3#.

B) 49.Kh1 Qg1(f1,f3)#.

Sep-13-21  nikonoel: Chess is all about geometry.
Sep-13-21  goldfarbdj: Qf2+ was the intuitively obvious move, but it took me an oddly long time to notice that after the king took the knight, Qf3 was mate.
Sep-13-21  Brenin: <Chess for life>: 00:01 Greenwich Mean Time (= UTC), i.e. 01:01 British Summer Time, 20:01 East Coast US time.

<Phony Benoni>: Add me to the list: it was about half a minute before the penny dropped.

Sep-13-21  Once: <Pony Benoni> And me. The white Queen and Rook are so far up the board ... and it's a Monday ... so surely we are looking for a win for white?

Nope. It's black to play and don't call me Shirley.

perfidious: Took a few seconds for me also to notice that ....Qf3 was terminal.
Sep-13-21  saturn2: The nice pattern is Qf3 mates also after 49.Qh1
Sep-13-21  QueenMe: Making effective use of the opponent's pieces!
Sep-13-21  zb2cr: 48. .... Qf2+ does it. White moving the King to h1 is clearly fatuous. Therefore, 49. Kxh3, Qf3# is what wraps it up.

chrisowen: a knight the rim is dim.
Sep-13-21  TheTamale: <Phony Benoni>: Yes, in fact I can't BELIEVE how long it took me to see this.
Sep-13-21  catlover: <Phony Benoni>, it took me a minute or two.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but as I remember it, the Monday puzzles generally used to be sacrifices, usually involving the queen. Now the Monday puzzles tend to be a bit more subtle and less easy.

Sep-13-21  TheaN: That's a mate in two and a five second spot... if you initially look for the right color. And I'm not alone there, I see.
Sep-13-21  Stanco: I spent a good minute when I realised it is black to move.
Sep-13-21  Damenlaeuferbauer: After long thinking, the strong American IM Walter Shipman finally found the mate in 2 moves with the nice knight sacrifice 48.-,Qf2+! 49.Kxh3 (49.Kh1,Qf1/Qg1#) 49.-,Qf3#. It is always a pleasure to see when black wins with my old love from the first half of the 80s, the Open Ruy.

My experience exactly! An oddly long time.

eternaloptimist: <goldfarbdj & gawain> My experience w/ this puzzle exactly also! It took longer than it should’ve for me to solve it
Sep-13-21  TheBish: The puzzle would be better starting a move earlier (47...Nh3+) but I suppose that would make it a Tuesday puzzle. Otherwise, very easy. The only reason I didn't get it instantly is I assumed (for some reason) that it was going to be White to play!
