FSR: A very nice win against a grandmaster. Nagle's 20...Rxh4!! exploiting the back rank weakness is a glorious shot, reminiscent of something Bronstein once did. I think Bronstein's move was capturing a twice-protected (or possibly thrice-protected) pawn with ...Rxa3!! allowing either Rxa3 or bxa3, both of which got mated.

perfidious: White must have had the feeling that he'd managed to escape the worst of things after capturing twice on d7 until cold reality struck, with his opponent's shattering rejoinder.

See the final thirty seconds of this clip from the original film The Mechanic to get an idea of how McDonald must have felt: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JSCi...

<FSR> Seems to me I remember something like that in one of Bronstein's games also, but not off the top of my head.

FSR: <perfidious> The game I was referring to is V Mikenas vs Bronstein, 1965.

FSR: I guess this game is too humdrum and boring to ever be GOTD.
Nov-22-23  johnlspouge: 20..Rxh4 is an amazing confluence, simultaneously overburdening two pieces protecting two squares!

FSR: <johnlspouge> I know, amazing game, right? Incidentally, I once won a outrageous swindle against Nagle before he was an IM, after having played like a moron for much of the game: F Rhine vs S Nagle, 1997.
